Romania’s Simona Halep has progressed into the best four term in Fes after defeating this year’s Auckland champion Greta Arn of Hungary. The 2010 Romanian runner-up beat her opponent in straight sets to approach her biggest success of the season.
Halep beat Arn 6-2, 6-1, prviding at the same time of of the biggest surprises of quarter finals. This was also Halep’s second win over the Hungarian whom she had met just once before. The 19-year-old Romanian, who is chasing ehr first title of career, first defeated the foruth-seeded at the 2010 Montereal tournament. Simona will next play either Nadia Lalami or Kirsten Flipkens.
Lalami reached the quarter finals after edging Aravane Rezai in three sets, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 and becomes the only Moroccan remained on course for the trophy. Her next opponent, Flipkens, has also reached the last eight round after ousting Eleni Daniilidou 6-4, 7-5.
As for the second half of the table, Anastasia Pivovarova set a Russian meeting with Dinara Safina whom she’ll play for the first time. The unranked youngster eliminated second favorite Yaroslava Shvedova in two sets 6-2, 7-6, producing one of the biggest surprises of the week. Safina beat Alize Cornet 6-1, 6-3 and starts the quarter final meeting as favorite.
Said Pivovarova: “It was a tough battle, but I’m happy to get through. It’s so unusual for me to be at a tournament without my mom or a coach. I appreciate all the support I’ve received.” Finally, Alberta Brianti and Melanie Oudin are the last to fight for a place into the semi finals.
Brianti stunned Ksenia Pervak in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, while her next opponent reached the quarter finals after Polona Hercog was forced to pull over due to medical problems.
