Security analyst Sidney Jones who is a highly-regarded Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) expert and has conducted extensive research for the International Crisis Group said after Indonesian security forces dismantle a terrorist training camp in Aceh last year, various small groups that are left re think their strategy.
For years they have tried and failed to establish an Islamic state through violence to overthrow the government. She said they are now starting to see the effectiveness of different type of Islamic group in pressuring the government. For example the enactment of anti-pornography law and the recent ban applied to Ahmadiyya group in spreading their beliefs.
“We have seen the success of civilian hard liners in pushing their agenda and after the training camp in Aceh, a criticism that appears in jihad organizations is, ‘What have we achieved through jihad operations?’ Zero,” said Jones.
Since then, Jones said there is a growing relationship between the militant groups and civilian run Islamist organizations such as the Islamic Defenders Front, which is not openly proclaimed violence as their way of achieving Islamist State.
Bonor Tigor Naipospos from Setara Institute which monitors religious freedom in Indonesia says that it is no coincidence that the violence against Christians and Ahmadiyya congregation are worsened recently.
Many Muslims consider Ahmadis as apostate teachings or blasphemous, because although Ahmadis consider themselves Muslims, they do not consider Muhammad as the final prophet.
Naipospos believes that radical groups instigated the attack to create a wider conflict. He said, “They want to get response from Christian groups. They hope that Christian groups will respond with further violence and enlarge the conflict”
Although the Government is proactively dismantles (the violence) terrorist groups, Jones said the government is slow in responding to violence related to religious intolerance.
By being passive, she said, the Governments hopes to gather wide support from the Indonesians population. (VOA)
