The prosecutor in the journalist killing case only charges the three defendants with 8 months of jail time. The journalist, Ridwan Salamun a Sun TV journalist was speared and beaten to death by three people while on duty covering a story about a brawl involving two groups in Tual in South East Maluku in September 2010.
The Indonesian press council has expressed their disappointment and urges the Attorney General to look into the case. The press council believes that the prosecutor have not appropriately charge the defendant for their crime.
The Press Council recommends the prosecutor to charge the three defendants with Clause 338 of the Criminal Code which has a maximum penalty of 18 years of jail or Clause 170 which carries a maximum of 12 years in jail.
The Press Council has also issued a statement that urges the prosecutor to charge the defendant with the maximum punishment for the heinous crime and also urges the judge to be understanding.
This has added to the long list of dissatisfaction about some of the cases where journalist ended up as victims where only few of those were ever tried.
Bagir Manan, the Chairman of the Press Council expresses his disappointment at the result of the trial. “This act perpetrated against Ridwan Salamun leading to his death is very serious, especially he is a journalist doing his journalistic duty” says Bagir.
Another similar case tried in January 2010 where the defendant only gets 2.5 years for beating to death a Radar Bali journalist Narendra Prabangsa
