After the incident of Ambassador Meera Shankar being patted down at the Jackson airport, the US on Thursday reached out to the ambassador regretting the incident. The US Secretary of state Hillary Clinton said, “We obviously are concerned about it.”
“The US department of state has reached out to the ambassador and has regretted what all happened,” Indian embassy spokesperson Virender Paul said. The Indian Ambassador was singled out of the security line for the reason that she was wearing a sari and that such an outfit was unusual in the country.
Speaking about the review on Thursday, Clinton did not reveal much about the matter but had said that the matter will be looked in to and the foreign minister will also be contacted regarding reviewing the policies.
The Indian external affairs minister S M Krishna had also expressed that such an incident is not acceptable. Sources have said that, not all passengers are subject to pat downs, only those passengers who set off the metal alarm have to go through the screening. And Shankar had passed through the metal frame without setting off the alarm.
