The Yogyakarta Palace Empress Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Hemas has started the candidate search to replace the late Ki Surakso Hargo or Mbah Maridjan as Mount Merapi caretaker.
Queen Hemas, met Ponimin and requested that one of the community leader in Kaliadem, Kepuharjo Village, Cangkringan District, Sleman Regency District to replace Mbah Maridjan who died by pyroclastic eruption of Mount Merapi.
Ponimin who was also injured in the hot clouds was visited by the Queen at his relatives at home in Ngenthak, Umbulmartani Village, Ngemplak District, Sleman regency. Besides checking up on Ponimin conditions, the Queen also requested Ponimin to be the Mount Merapi caretaker.
Yogyakarta Palace where the King and Queen reside
“You’re now watching Merapi” said the Queen.
Ponimin who had been living on the south side of the “Lava Tour” around 5 to 6 km from Merapi summit, Kepuharjo work as the Head of Finance of Kepuharjo Village, District Cangkringan
The request however was not directly answered by Ponimin. “I can not answer this right now, “said Ponimin.
In 2006, Ponimin resign as courtiers and expressed disappointment with the palace as well as with Mbah Marijan. Ponimin was disappointed that Mbah Marijan agreed to be contracted for commercials by a famous herbal medicine company and for the Palace to allow that to happen.
“Very well, we will discuss this another time “said the Queen.
The Queen visited Ponimin for almost an hour, she wanted to hear directly from Ponimin his story and his family who survived the raging heat clouds when Merapi erupts, Tuesday (26/10) afternoon.
Ponimin say when their house which was less than 1 km away from Mbah Marijans, was hit by hot clouds, he along with his wife and children took shelter behind his wife mukena (Muslim women praying clothe). His house was destroyed, but Ponimin, his wife and children survived. Ponimin only suffered burns on the soles of the feet and one child suffered burns on his right elbow.
Ponimin was treated in the Panti Nugroho Hospital, Pakem until Tuesday night, but the next day he and his family chose to shelter at the doctor’s house in Sleman until today. The mukena was being offered to be purchased for USD 4,000 but Ponimin rejected it.
Ponimin also told the Queen that a supernatural being told him about the eruption, that the hot cloud would hit Mbah Marijan house. He also says that there are more eruptions to come.
The King Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X however has a different view regarding the situation. He regretted the fact that those two heads of community (Mbah Marijan and Ponimin) ignored all scientific data and refused to evacuate. Their arrogance, the King says, resulted in refusal of the villagers to be evacuated as well.
“This is absolute Cangkringan arrogance,” said the King who is also governor of Yogyakarta Special Region while visiting refugee camps in Hargobinangun and Umbulharjo, Tuesday night
