Real beat Lyon 4-0 on Bernabeu
Real Madrid stay unbeaten in the group D after Jose Mourinho’s side demolished Olympique Lyon 4-0 last night on Santiago Bernabeu in the third game of the UEFA Champions League group stage.
Benzema opened the score amid the first part and Khedira doubled the lead early in the second one. Lloris deflected the ball into the own net just minutes later, while Sergio Ramos closed the meeting with a fourth one scored just before the final whistle.
Lyon started the game with a good control of the ball in Real’s half, but Sergio Ramos cleared the air several times. Without Carvalho, Ramos was expected to have a hard life in the back but the Spanish side would leave the pitch with the sheet clean. Di Maria missed the first chance for Madrid in the fifth minute, his 35 yard shot making Lloris work hard for the save.
Cristiano Ronaldo got his first goal chance two minutes later following a superb cross from Khedira which the Portuguese volleyed wide to his own dismay. Ozil earned Real a free kick in the 11th minute but Ronaldo hit the wall from 20 yards or so.
Madrid won yet another free kick five minutes later which the same Ronaldo taken over the ball but straight at keeper Lloris who made the save with some ease. The same Real star finished a corner action with a half volley goalwards which brought the hosts another corner. But for Jose Mourinho’s side, the opener had become just a matter of time, given their dominance.
Benzema broke through in the 19th minute following a corner on the right the Frenchman converted home from close range. A scatterbrain from Marcelo allowed Briand to win the ball in dangerous area but it was Casillas to deny the striker with a remarkable effort.
Lyon were then disallowed a goal for an offside position as the visitors were more present in the opposite half. Alonso picked the first yellow card of the night in the 38th minute for not expecting referee’s whistle. Mesut Ozil tried his luck with a dangerous shot from good position which Lloris saved at the death.
Ronaldo then started persona exquisite on the left the finish of which saw the Portuguese hit it just wide off the target. The half time went 1-0 as Real were still dominating the meeting. Just two minutes into the second part, Khedira doubled the lead following a superb action on the left which Benzema finish with an unselfish pass for the German who put it home from seven yards.
The 55th minute brought the Spaniards even a third one, something which finally made Mourinho pleased with his side showing, given his first half large number of orders . Mesut Ozil was picked on the left only to strike it goalwards from a pretty tight angle. Lloris deflected the ball into the own net to gift the hosts the victory.
Mourinho made the first change in the 60th minute, introducing newly transferred Fabio Coentrao for scorer Khedira. Five minutes later he would also replace Ozil with Kaka in the middle. The Brazilian got his first chance just a couple of minutes later, but his shot was tipped by the Lyon keeper.
Lyon also made a substitution in the 70th minute when Gourcuff departed for Ederson. Mourinho answered with a third move, replacing Benzema with Higuain. Briand conceded a yellow in the 75th minute for a trip on Di Maria. The Argentine then managed to deliver a superb cross inside the French box which Ronaldo failed to contact.
With eight minutes left in the game, Sergio Ramos made it four following a corner from the left which the French defence cleared poorly. Ramos took advantage of the rebound to smash it home from ten yards or so.
Real won and are by far the main favorite for the leading position in the group D which they lead with nine points. On the other side, Lyon are third with four points, the same as second placed Ajax Amsterdam who beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 the same night away.
Lyon and Real will meet again in the fourth day of the group on November 2 when the French will host Mourinho’s side on Stade de Gerland.
Said Marcelo at the end of the game: “All of us players help each other out and that helps us improve. It is difficult to score so many goals against a team like Olympique Lyonnais. We were compact in defence and pressurised in attack. Nevertheless, it was never easy… Mourinho is a great coach and you feel his presence on the pitch when he’s on the bench.”
