Inter move top after Lille win
Former European champions Inter Milan grabbed a hard fought win last night at the Metropole stadium where the Italians beat French champions Lille 1-0 in group B of UEFA Champions League.
Pazzini scored the only goal of the game amid the first half, giving the Nerrazzuri the second win of the group stage. Newly arrived on Metropole Joe Cole was the first to trouble Julio Cesar in the fifth minute, but Chivu was there to block the former Chelsea player with a late regular tackle. Sow escaped from marking minutes later but the Lille striker was stopped by an offside decision.
Hazard then made some space on the left but his delivery was cleared by a vigilant Pazzini. Chivu saved his side from yet another dangerous action developed by Hazard in the 20th minute whose finish was blocked by the Romanian who had a great night in Lille.
But just two minutes later Inter broke the ice and made it 1-0 through Pazzini who beat the keeper Enyeama with a superb volley from inside the box, following a lovely play from Zarate. Lille struggled to put more pressure as Debuchy had his effort parried by Cesar in the 25th minute in what could have been a turning point of the game.
Pedretti tried his luck with a shot from distance in the 31st minute but the finish went well wide. Inter edged the second goal three minutes later when Zarate assumed an individual action the finish of which saw him blocked by Basa.
Inter picked the first yellow card in the 40th minute as Chivu was cautioned by the referee for a trip on Mavuba. Lille, too, conceded a yellow one through Chedjou who was shown the card for a foul on Pazzini two minutes later. The half time went 1-0 as both sides were keeping possession consistently.
The French got their first big chance five minutes into the second part when Sow tried his luck with a range shot which could have brought the hosts a leveler had Cesar failed to pay attention to the trajectory. Motta conceded his first yellow card in the 52nd minute for a late challenge on Hazard.
On the other side, Lille also picked another yellow through Pedretti who was cautioned for a foul on Zarate. Balmont edged the leveler in the 62nd minute when the midfielder made himself some space in a dangerous area only to be blocked by Lucio. Claudio Ranieri, who was making his second appearance in UEFA Champions League as Nerrazzuri manager, introduced Obi for Zarate in the 65th minute.
Cesar hindered the French of evening the situation in the 66th minute following a lovely action built by Payet whose shot was saved by the Brazilian. Inter then replaced playmaker Sneijder with Dejan Stankovic who got his first chance just minutes after being introduced. Maicon played the reserve in good position but Stankovic’s finish was deflected away by Enyeama.
Lille also made a change in the 76th minute as Cole made way for Obraniak. Sow tried his luck from the edge of the box but saw his effort saved by the same Cesar who would keep the sheet clean until the final whistle. Lille replaced Balmont with Gueye in the 80th minute, while Diego Milito entered the pitch for Pazzini.
Lille had the last word on Metropole but Obraniak’s dangerous cross went just over the bar in the 87th minute. Inter won and are top spot in the group B with six points. As for Lille, the French side lie foot of the table with two points won in three games. The two sides meet again on November 2 at the Giuseppe Meazza.
The same day CSKA Moscow crashed Trabzonspor 3-0 on Luzhniki stadium as the Russians are second in the group with four points, the same as the Turks.
Said Inter president Massimo Moratti after the game: “It was a lovely evening; interesting and important for many reasons. It puts us in a position to regain our confidence, to understand that we are still the same team. Of course, there is still much to do, but not as much as was previously thought.”
