Phillies Continue Freefall Against Nationals
Phillies concede sixth straight
Philadelphia have conceded their sixth straight loss when the East champions were stunned 1-6 last night at the Citizens Bank Park where Washington have extended their winning streak to five successes.
Nationals dominated the entire game as Phillies could only chase a consolation point. The first two terms went scoreless, though, but the game was far from being as tight as expected. Washington were first put into the lead by Ankiel who scored the first point in the third term, following Desmond’s double.
Desmond doubled it after Bernadina singled to right, but Phillies were still struggling for a break through. The next four innings also went blank for both teams as Nationals were heading towards a clear win. Things did get more complicated for the hosts when Desmond extended the lead to three points. He scored the third one after Bernadina doubled to center in the eighth term, the victory becoming just a matter of time for the third placed.
Even more than that, Nationals came up even with a triple minutes later. Morse hit a 425 foot homerun which involved both Bernadina and Zimmerman who made it 6-0 with one round left to be played. Finally, Philadelphia were given the consolation by Mayberry Jr. who scored the only point after Ruiz singled to right. He also got to second on a throwing error committed by fielder Bernadina.
Said Shane Victorino after the game: “We have to find a way to gather our focus. The way we’re playing is what people are looking at, the way we’re losing, the offense not clicking. Mentally you need to find a way to get rolling in the right direction.”
Nationals manager Davey John looked the more pleased with the result his side managed to grab it against a top side, in fact the best one in the league. “You want to compete against the teams in your division and we took a step in that direction,” said the capital boss.
Washington are third in the East with a .490 still negative record which includes 76 wins and 79 defeats, the victory over the leaders being their fifth in a row, eighth in the past ten games and 34th on the road. As for Phillies, they remain top spot with a .628 record including 98 wins and 58 defeats.
Philadelphia, who have already qualified for the playoffs must be very concerned, given their poor recent showings which have brought them six straight failures. The loss to Nationals was their seventh in the past ten games and 29th at home.
Houston Astros 9 – 6 Colorado Rockies
Astros overcame Colorado yesterday at the Minute Maid Park where the hosts were led 0-1 and 1-2 in the first three innings. An impressive midway comeback helped Houston close the gap to even five points with three innings left, something which brought them a clear late win at home. The first round went scoreless for both sides, while the second one saw COlroado take the first lead through Tulowitzki who scored the first one after Kouzmanoff grounded into fielder’s choice to pitcher.
Astros broke back immediately through Bogusevic who evened the situation after Barmes doubled to left. Rockies managed to build yet another advantage in the third round when Young Jr. made it 2-1 thanks to Sosa’s wild pitch. Unfortunately for the visitors, that was their last sparkle moment as well as the last lead.
Houston came up with a double right afterwards, provided by Altuve and Martinez who made it 4-2 following Lee’s double. Schafer scored even a third straight point in the fifth term after the same Lee hit a sacrifice fly to center. Rockies could only cut deficits as Kouzmanoff did so in the seventh inning, hitting a 383 foot homerun, the first one of the game.
The hosts replied with yet another double coming from both Altuve and Lee who made it 8-3 after Downs doubled to center minutes later. Colorado threatened with a comeback in the eighth term when they scored a triple through Rosario, who hit a 433 foot homerun, Smith and Kouzmanoff, which put their side just two points behind the opponents.
But the away side failed to do so, conceding a ninth point right afterwards. Schafer hit a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Barmes to close the meeting with Towles getting to third and Johnson to second on a throwing error committed by fielder Fowler.

St. Louis Cardinals 6 – 8 New York Mets
Mets stunned Cardinals yesterday at the Busch stadium after overcoming a 1-6 deficit the visitors had been subjected to with two innings left. St. Louis started the game with a two point quick lead brought by Craig, who hit a 430 foot homerun, and Furcal who opened the meeting with a double.
The next three rounds went scoreless for both sides in what seemed to be a great day for the hosts. New York’s first reply came in the fifth inning through Thole who cut the deficit to one point after Teajada walked, having Baxter to third and Reyes to second.
But Mets’ momentum was broken right afterwards. St. Louis started a four point run which apparently seemed to give them a comprehensive win. Pjolus opened the rally with a 391 foot homerun, while Berkam made it 3-1 after Molina singled to left.
The sixth term went blank for the two sides but St. Louis were still chasing more points. Descalso put his side four points atop in the seventh one, while Molina finished the run with a sixth one, in what was the turning point of the meeting.
The unexpected was yet to come for the visitors, though there were only two terms remaining. Mets developed a much more consistent rally on their own, starting with the eighth term. Tejada closed the gap to four points in what was the only sparkle moment of the term for New York.
The ninth one brought the away side six more unexpected points as well as a huge hard fought win. Harris made it 3-6 early in the last round after Turner walked. Evans then scored the fourth one for his side, following Reyes’s singling, with Pridie getting to third and Turner to second, as well.
Cardinals faced a big scare when Pridie and Turner came up with a double which evened the situation when nobody expected. Even more than that, Reyes and Tejada scored a couple of more points for a clear win, after Harris singled to right just before the end.
Mets are second from the bottom in the East with a .474 record which includes 74 wins and 82 defeats, the victory over Cardinals being their third in the past ten games and 43rd on the road where they have provided a much better record that the home one.

Minnesota Twins 3 – 2 Seattle Mariners
Minnesota have finally picked their 60th win of the season after edging Seattle yesterday at the Target Field. The hosts survived an early scare and fought back to overcome the deficit amid the meeting. Seattle grabbed the first lead in the opening term through Suzuki who scored the first point after Smoak singled to center. Gimenez doubled it in the second inning, following Suzuki’s sacrifice fly, but that game still was not over.
But on the contrary, Twins cut the deficit in the next round through Tosoni who resuscitated his side after Butera grounded into double play. The fourth inning went scoreless for both sides as Mariners seemed to be heading towards the victory in Minneapolis.
But Tosoni denied them with a leveler scored in the fifth term as things were becoming very complicated for the away side. The next three terms went blank but the ninth one saw the same Minnesota score the winner through Plouffe who gave his side a big win, following Tosoni’s double.
Twins remain foot of the table in the Central with a .387 record which includes 60 wins and 95 defeats, the victory over Mariners being their first in the past ten games and 31st at home.
