Kirilenko reaches semi finals
Main favorite Maria Kirilenko has reached the Guangzhou semi finals when the Russian defeated Tetiana Luzhanska in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5 in the final eight term. Kirilenko will next play Chanelle Scheepers who follows a three set win over Urszula Radwanska.
Kirilenko broke her opponent three times only in the opener which she won by five games despite losing a service amid the term. The Ukraine player threatened with a late comeback after sticking by the opponent until the tenth game. But a late break allowed the Russian to close the meeting in two sets and one hour and 22 minutes.
The Russian conceded a couple of more service sin the last set but broke her opponent three more times to grab the win without dropping a set. Kirilenko finished the game with a 59 first serve percentage, a 57 return one, winning at the same time 61 percent of service points. On the other side, Tetiana came up with a 73 first serve percentage, a 39 return one and a couple of double faults.
Russian’s next opponent is Chanelle Scheepers who needed three sets as well as three hours to oust tough Urszula Radwanska. The South African lost the first set after conceding a couple of services and was very close to losing the match, as well in the second set when the same African managed to push the round into a tight breaker which saw the two go head to head until the 13th point.
Chanelle leveled the score after a 8-6 win in the tie break to push the meeting into a third set decider. Finally, a couple of more breaks helped Scheepers to take a three game lead in the last term and seal the victory in three hours and eight minutes.
The South African, who had previously defeated Anastasija Sevastova and Su Wei Hsieh, finished the meeting with a 71 first serve percentage, a 45 return one and a 56 service percentage, committing at the same time 11 double faults.
As for Radwanksa, the Polish player, who had previously ousted one of the min favorites Bojana Jovanovski and Yung Jan Chan, won 58 percent of service points, 44 of returning ones, committed six double faults and fired a couple of aces to lose the first ever meeting with the world number 73 African.
The biggest surprise of the day came from Magdalena Rybarikova who ousted second seed and defending champion Jarmila Gajdosova in two easy sets, 6-4, 6-3. The Slovak needed just one hour and 15 minutes to make the progress as she broke her opponent twice in the opener and a couple of more times in the last set which she won much easier.
Jarmila broke her opponent twice but never got the chance to goop atop, losing the meeting in straight sets. Rybarikova won 53 percent of first serve points, 51 of receiving ones and 64 of service points, hitting at the same time six aces past the Aussie whose showing included a 51 first serve percentage, a 36 return one and four double faults.
Jie Zheng was the second player to provide a big surprise in China as the crowd favorite player edged fourth favorite Petra Martic in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarter finals. The Chinese player found the strength to come from behind and overcome a one set deficit she had been subjected to in the first term.
Martic rallied past her opponent in the opener, managing to grab a couple of breaks which secured her the first advantage. But the second set saw Zheng go two games ahead thanks to a couple of breaks which helped her to push the clash further into a third set.
Finally, Zheng took a three game lead amid the decider to power through to a two hour and ten minute unexpected win against the seed who failed to convert any of her two break points built in the last round. Zheng won 84 percent of first serve points, 61 of service ones and hit two aces past the Croatian whose performance featured a 56 first serve percentage, a 39 return one, five double faults and a couple of aces.
Said Zheng after the win: “In the first set, I was a little nervous and it wasn’t that she played amazingly well, I just gave a lot of points to her. However I feel like I’m playing better and better here in Guangzhou as the matches go on.”
The Chinese had previously ousted Noppawan Lertcheewakarn in the second term and Alberta Brianti in the first day, while her next opponent Rybarikova follows a three set win against Jill Craybas and a two set one over Aravane Rezai whom she defeated in the second round.
