Mubarak's Trial Resumes in Cairo
Mubarak at Trial
Clashes erupted in the streets of Cairo on Monday as the former president of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, 83, was brought to the court for a second session of his trial that started on August 3, inside the building of Police Academy in Cairo.
The former president is accused of having ordered the shooting of the protestors in the streets of Cairo and in Tahrir Square during the revolution in January and February, and also of acts of corruption and abuse of office.
If found guilty, Mubarak faces death penalty by hanging, according to Egyptian law. He shares the defendant’s cage with his sons, also accused of acts of corruption.
On Monday, Mubarak was brought on a stretcher with an helicopter, from the Cairo hospital where he had been committed immediately after the first session of the court.
Those who were expecting him demanding that justice be done and he be judged for the deaths of those in the Egyptian revolution shouted at the sight of the helicopter: „The thief has arrived,” „Judge, wake up! Mubarak killed my brothers! Execute the killer!”
Police had to contain the crowd of people who were on Mubarak’s side and who threw stones. At a certain moment, the police were unable to contain them and they chased out of the building those who were demanding the death of the former president.
Mubarak appeared in court composed and with the hands on his chest, dressed in a navy blue sweater, without the white costume of the prisoners. He spoke to his sons, who were trying to protect him from the cameras.

Judge presiding was Ahmed Refaat. He called the former president by name and upon hearing the response demanded for calm and order.
The court decided if the current ruler of the military council that assures provisional government of Egypt, Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, could take the stand to speak about what happened in those days.
Defense considers that Tantawi’s testimony could prove vital for the fate of the former president. Besides Tantawi’s testimony it is expected that the court would hear the testimony of another 1,600 people who had anything to do with the former regime.
When asked if Tantawi would appear in court, military officials said that if security concerns demanded it, his testimony would be sent on writing. However, they said that he would bring his testinomy later during the trial to avert the military from taking the heat of the controversial debate.
Hosni Mubarak is the first leader of the Arab world with a long reign to be deposed by his people and to face trial and possible sentence to death, excepting of course Saddam Hussein, whose country was invaded by foreign force.
