Qaddafi Urges Libyans To Take Arms
Muammar al-Qaddafi
Colonel Muammar al-Qaddafi addressed the Libyan people on Monday by making a speech over the phone, the first public address since the beginning of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.
In his address Qaddafi told the Libyan people it was time to pick up the weapons and liberate the soil of the country of traitors and NATO. He emphasized that the Libya remains, that the revolution started in 1969 continues, and called on the people to get ready for the fight, adding that the blood of the martyrs is “fuel for the battlefield.”
He predicted a soon end of the “colonizers,” and of the “rats,” alluding probably to the rebel forces fighting in the eastern side of the country.
Thousands of people were killed over the past six months, as the rebels attempted to get close to the capital Tripoli. Qaddafi considers that the rebels are no more than al-Qaeda terrorists and deemed NATO’s campaign against him as a colonizing act.
The unrest began in Libya six months ago in the city of Benghazi, where people protested the arbitrary arrest of a lawyer. The government intervened with brutality and the situation escalated rapidly.
When reports came in that the Libyan aviation was shooting at its own citizens, a coalition of the willing was set up, led by France, to install a no-fly area in Libya. The air strikes led by NATO hit the targets but on the ground the situation remained unsettled, as the rebels have been pushing toward the capital, and have been constantly been pushed back by the governmental forces.
Qaddafi made a pledge to fight to the death, and said he was not going to leave the territory of his country. On various occasions his sons were presumed killed by the NATO attacks but they made television appearances to show they were alive.

Civil War in Libya
An international court for crimes against humanity issued an international arrest warrant in his name, and the Contact Group on Libya met in the capital of Turkey, a key player in the region, to decide that the regime of Qaddafi was no longer legitimate.
The Western countries gathered in Istanbul decided that the legitimate authority was the Transitional National Council in Benghazi.
They pledged to help this council with money and weaponry to make sure the regime of Qaddafi is overthrown.
In the light of this decision, the United Kingdom has already dismissed the Libyan ambassador appointed by Qaddafi, and installed in London ambassadors sent by TNC.
A week ago, the Israeli website Debka, considered a Mossad-related site, was announcing that a ground invasion was being prepared against Libya, and that it would be deployed in about two weeks. The invasion was prepared, according to Debka, by NATO and the American troops would join sometime in October.
Russia, a steadfast ally of the Qaddafi regime, the country that opposed the NATO campaign from the beginning, announced through its president that it imposed its own set of sanctions against the regime in Tripoli.
As the situation in the field remains undecided, the question is removing Qaddafi from power. To that effect, France conducted negotiations with the regime and was able to announce at a moment that the leader would step down and remain in Libya, a news quickly dismissed by Tripoli as Western propaganda.
