North Korea Agrees To Denuclearization of Peninsula
Kim Jong-il
North Korea renewed on Monday its call for the discussions on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula to be resumed in the six-nation format. This is the first such comment made by the Communist regime since the talks were resumed in New York last week between the U.S. representative for North Korea and the North Korean foreign minister.
In the statement made on Monday, North Korea announced it was ready to implement the 2005 agreement which stipulates that it should abandon the nuclear programs.
The Communist regime, which is confronted with huge economic problems and with an international isolation, has been demanding for months the resumption of the six-party talks, by which North Korea could give up its nuclear program in exchange for economic and diplomatic benefits.
The U.S. representative for North Korea Stephen Boswich said that his office was still looking for reasons to believe that Pyongyang is really committed to renouncing its nuclear programs.
In comments quoted by the North Korean state agency, the North is seeking to implement “comprehensibly” the provision of the 2005 agreement, and has demanded for the six-nation talks to be resumed without preconditions.
In 2005, by the agreement signed in September 19, North Korea promised to renounce all kind of nuclear weapons and nuclear energy programs and to receive its amount of energy needed from the other countries participating in the negotiations: the United States, Russia, China, Japan and South Korea.
The six-nation format negotiations had been abandoned in the past due to the brutal attitude of the northern Korean state toward the south, and because it was deemed fruitless by the participants in it, since North Korea never played fair.
However, the situation seems to be deteriorating in the country as the health condition of the dictator is more and more problematic.
Last year, the Worker’s Party had a national reunion by which the young son of Kim Jong-il was showed as the heir apparent to the highest office of the regime.

The Heir Apparent
Young Kim Jong-eun, not long ago an anonymous figure in North Korea, was promoted to a high rank within the military, as a sign that he had the support of the most important political force in the land, but also as a sign that he would be under their control.
Fear that Kim Jong-il may die and live a country in disarray, consumed with domestic fights for power, and with a dangerous nuclear program running, preoccupies both China and the Western countries.
China has an important influence on the regime in Pyongyang, and there is much interest in bringing them to the negotiation table in order to place the nuclear program under control.
China advocated the case of North Korea, attempting to revive the six-nation format, and vouching for the outcome this time.
Last week, North Korea and the United States held some “exploratory talks” about the nuclear programs, appreciated by both sides as constructive.
North Korea is pushing toward the signing of a peace treaty with the U.S., which, in their opinion, would put an end to the Korean War, and would give the Communist regime motives to think that the denuclearization would not leave the country defenseless in front of what it still considers an enemy.
