Strycova advances with the sheet clean
Barbora Zahlavova Strycova ousted Swedish wildcard Hilda Melander 6-2, 6-3 at the $220,000 Swedish Open to meet Anastasiya Yakimova in the second term.
The 25-year-old Czech, who has started the Open as a seventh favorite, beat the unseeded in nearly one hour and will meet the world number 93 Yakimova for the second time. The 24-year-old Belarusian had some hard times against the 37-year-old American Jill Craybas who stole the first set at two, only to be left two sets behind later on. Yakimova ousted the American after a tough second set which saw the two go head to head until the tie-break. Finally, the breaker was won by the 60th-ranked who edged Craybas 7-6(5). The decider found the same Belarusian powering through to a five-game advantage which propelled her through into the second term.
The head to head series between Yakimova and Strycova have gone 1-0 to the Belarusian who beat the Czech at the 2007 Estoril event. Concerning the first half of the draw, top seed Caroline Wozniacki, who follows a big upset at the Wimbledon Grand Slam, will make her debut against Alize Cornet, whom the world champions will be playing for the fourth time.

The world number 86 will meet the 21-year-old Romanian for the third time, the head to head series between the two having gone 1-1 with the last victory belonging to the world number 83 who last beat Mirjana at this term’s Australian open, in the last 128 round. Croatian’s only win comes from the 2010 Quebec City tournament.
Maria Jose Martinez will meet Iveta Benesova in the first round of the Swedish event, the two being expected to meet for the third time. The direct confrontations have gone 1-1, the 28-year-old Spaniard having last defeated the world number 44 at the 2006 Acapulco tournament. As for the Czech, she last upset the world number 62 at the 2002 Orbetello event, Tuesday’s game being also their third clash on a clay court.
On the greatest shaped Swedish players of the moment, Sofia Arvidsson will start the home tournament against Andrea Hlavackova of Czech Republic in what will be their second lifetime clash.
