Nationwide protests broke out in Malawi on Wednesday, as people took it to streets protesting against president Bingu wa Mutharika and the way he manages economy and observes human rights.
One person was shot by the police and the shops remained closed on Thursday, when riot police deployed to prevent any new flare-up of the unrest.

The protest on Wednesday went on through the night, with protesters moving through Lilongwe’s old town looting the shops as they were walking the streets.
The commercial hub Blantyre was also shut down for fear of more looting, and residents said that most of the demonstrators were thugs who were looting in the name of protest for freedom.
In the northern town of Mzuzu, ammunition was used to disperse the protestors, causing one to die and six to be injured.
Police shot tear gas at a hospital in the capital of the country, which raised criticism of the journalists and protestors.
Some human rights activists and journalists were briefly arrested over the incidents in the cities of this southern African country.
Western countries cut off the donations to support Malawi, one of the poorest countries of the world. Britain was the last to do so last week, when word got out about the way the money West is donating the country is spent.
Malawi suffered serious shortage of food supplies since the government ran low on cash to buy food, which drew the anger of the population.
