Park ponders a two-year extension with United
Ji-sung Park is to receive a two-year extension to the original contract, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed on Friday. The South Korean, 30, is thus likely to remain part of the Scott’s future plans although the Red Devils have now three important players on the same position, including Nani and newly-arrived Ashley Young.
Park has joined United back in 2005, having scored 17 goals and gathered 117 appearances with the Premier League champions with which he won four Premier League titles, three League Cups as well as a UEFA Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup trophy. The Korean has become a key piece for Alex Ferguson from the very beginning despite the fact that the midfielder had been kept on the bench at times. Park has become the third player to be gifted an extension by the Old Trafford side after Michael Carrick signed a new deal which runs through the 2014 season, and Ryan Giggs who was also given a one-season extension this summer.
Said Ferguson: “We have offered him a new contract and I am sure he will sign it. His career at United has been nothing but excellent. He is a tremendous professional. I am sure he will accept the new offer and tie himself down at the club for the next two years.” Ashley Young’s arrival in Manchester might make the Korean fight for his place as the former Aston Villa player follows a remarkable mandate with the Villa Park side for which he scored 30 goals in 157 appearances.
Nani is also among the targeted players who will have to convince Ferguson of his merit to remain a titular. Apparently, the Portuguese player didn’t look concerned about Young’s transfer, but on the contrary he had declared at the moment that he would enjoy the competition. Phil Jones of Blackburn Rovers have also joined the Red Devils this window, the first one being likely to play alongside Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in the defence.
Jones follows a solid mandate with Rovers for which he gathered 35 selections in two years. As for De Gea, the former Atletico Madrid keeper was given a five-year contract with this term’s UEFA Champions League finalists whom he has joined in the pre-season games in North America. The Spaniard is likely to replace Edwin Van der Sar at United as Thomasz Kuszczak is no longer a main candidate for the first XI team.
United finished the season with 80 points, nine more than the former champions Chelsea who failed to defend the title, something which led to Carlo Ancelotti’s sacking and former FC Porto coach Andre Villas Boas arrival. United will start the next season with an away meeting against West Bromwich Albiom whom Ferguson’s side are set to meet on August 14.
