Boston lose but stay safe
Yankees failed to take advantage of Red Sox’s loss to Royals and remain 2.5 gamesback behind the leaders in the East. Kansas beat Boston 4-3 at the Fenway Park despite a 0-2 deficit set in the third term by the hosts.
The first two innings went scoreless in Boston, while the third one saw the leaders take a quick 2-0 advantage through Varitek and Navarro who scored the first couple of points after Ellsbury singled to right. Royals’ reply came right afterwards, in the fourth inning through Butler, who fired a 412 foot homerun, Gordon and Maier who gave Kansas a 3-2 lead. Furthermore, Moustakas doubled to right, allowing Francoeur extend the lead to two points.
The next three terms went dry for both teams, while Boston could only score a third consolation point in the eighth term when Pedroia fired a 348 foot homerun which couldn’t resuscitate the home side for a late comeback. Red Sox lost, but keep the 2.5 gap against Yankees. “I thought it was gone. That’s why I put my head down and just started running. … I wasn’t worried about catching it. I was thinking about getting back to the wall,” said a happy Francoeur after the game.
Despite the win Kansas City remain foot of the table in the Central with a .419 record which features 44 wins and 61 losses, the victory over Red Sox being their sixth in the past ten games and 16th on the road. On the other side, Boston are first with a .621 percentage which includes 64 wins and 39 losses, the defeat to Royals being their third in the past ten games and 19th at home.
St Louis Cardinals 3 – 5 Houston Astros
Cardinals lost their second straight win but also a great chance to neat the leading position in the Central where the leaders from Milwaukee have set a reasonable 1.5 gap against them and Pirates. Unfortunately, Cardinals were stunned by bottom Astros at the Busch Stadium after they had led their visitors 3-1 at one point.
The first point was scored by Houston through Bourn who put his side into an early lead after Altuve hit a sacrifice fly to center. Cardinals broke back immediately in the second term through Laird and Theriot who gave the hosts a 2-1 lead also thanks to a throwing error committed by fielder Pence. Atlanta Braves 2 – 5 Pittsburgh Pirates
Pirates stay in touch with the leading position in the Central as the former leaders beat Braves at the Turner Field despite a poorer start. Atlanta got the first lead early in the first term through McLouth who scored after Hinske hit a ground rule double to right. But their joy wouldn’t last too long as Pirates broke back in the second inning when Correia singled to left for Overbay’s leveler.
From the on Atlanta failed to grab any lead as they could only score a second consolation point in the sixth inning. However the fifth term brought the visitors two more points as McCutchen doubled to center for Paul’s second point. Alvarez then grounded out to first while Jones double the advantage to 3-1.
Braves cut the deficit to one point in the sixth term when Uggla reached on infield single to shortstop as Freeman made it two also thanks to a throwing error committed by shortstop Cedeno. But that was the best they could do as Pirates drew the victory in the ninth through McCutchen, who fired a 421 foot homerun, and Pearce who closed out the game with a fifth point for Pittsburgh.

Mets edged Reds in a 19-point thriller at the Great American Ball Park where the two sides exchange the lead twice. The visitors took the first lead early in the first round through Murphy who made it 1-0 after Wright singled to right. Reds broke back immediately through Stubbs who leveled the score after Votto doubled to center. Even more than that, Cincinnati got into a minimal advantage right afterwards as Phillips doubled to center for Votto’s second point.
The next two innings went scoreless for both teams, while the fourth one saw Mets grab back the lead to draw the victory. Duda doubled to right as Murphy, Wright and Pagan managed to put their side two points ahead of the hosts. Thole then singled to center, allowing Duda to make it 5-2. Reds answered with a third point in the same inning, scored by Frazier, but they wouldn’t get any closer until the end.
Pagan singled to center as Turner extended the lead to three points in the fifth round, while trio Murphy, Wright and Pagan made things look clear as possible as they made it 9-3. But a forthcoming rally could have put them into big difficulty. Hernandez doubled to left for Bruce’s fourth point, while Cairo, who fired a 375 foot homerun, Hernandez and Frazier put the Reds two points within the favorites.
Moreover, Bruce doubled to center as Heisey cut the deficit to one point. But just when they though they were ready to provide the comeback, Cincinnati were stunned by a late point coming from Pagan who slowed their late impetus which could have brought them a big win. Finally, Votto fired a 413 foot homerun, but it was too late as New York were celebrating their 32nd win on the road.
Mets are third in the East with a .514 record featuring 54 wins and 51 defeats, the victory over Cincinnati being their seventh in the past ten games and fourth in a row. Concerning the Reds, they are fourth in the Central with a .476 percentage including 50 wins and 55 defeats, the loss to New York being their fourth in a row, seventh in the past ten games and 27th at home where they have gone .500.
Washington Nationals 2 – 5 Florida Marlins
Florida have extended their winning streak to five successes when they beat Nationals on Thursday at the Nationals Park where the visitors kept the lead most of the time. the first two innings went scoreless for both teams, while the third one saw Florida grab the first lead through Bonifacio who scored after Morrison grounded into fielder’s choice to first, but also thanks to a throwing error committed by baseman Espinosa.
