FOX has released the opening scene of the new season of The X-Files, but first reviews of the eagerly awaited series aren’t too crash hot.
If you’re an X-Files fan, then you probably know what to expect from the reboot. More than 13 years after the original series
concluded, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are back as FBI Special
Agents Mulder and Scully, and the minute-long teaser reveals Scully is
still fascinated by “controversial global phenomenon”.
Posted on domain doyoustillbelieve.com, the clip offers an explanation of Scully’s past, taking viewers back through past cases via a series of old photos.
While
the six-part series isn’t due to premiere until January 24, TV critics
given the jump on fans have been sharing their thoughts on the premiere
episode.
Here's what they’re saying:
“Yet while the
performers have aged in only the most flattering of ways, and Fox has
milked the build-up for all it’s worth, there’s a palatable feeling that
everyone is just going through the motions, despite the durability of
the show’s central conceit about distrusting authority and the prospect
of shadowy conspiracies reaching into the highest levels of government
and business.” - Variety
“In
messy, tedious form, the revered sci-fi series starring David Duchovny
and Gillian Anderson limps back for a limited run on Fox.
“[It] is
a very underwhelming hour that will force even diehard fans (and yes, I
was one of them) to consider whether pushing onward is really worth the
time.” - The Hollywood Reporter
“There’s
plenty in the episode for X-philes, including a return to Mulder’s
forgotten office, where pencils still protrude from the ceiling. And the
lurid enigmas personal and extraterrestrial that are the show’s calling
card are easy to step back into thanks to delicate expositional
dialogue and the comfortable chemistry of Anderson and Duchovny.
Admittedly, the former eases back into her role more seamlessly than the
latter, who strains to bring believable passion into Mulder’s climactic
monologue. But it’s difficult to care when you’re just so glad they’re
back.” - Comic Book Resources
“It’s
possible none of the critics have seen the best that the rebooted
X-Files has to offer. In other words, I want to believe.” - Vanity Fair
“Keeping
in mind this is only one-sixth of the series set to debut this January,
there’s plenty of time to recover. If the coming episodes — written by
fan favourite X-Files veterans and focusing more on monsters than
mythology — can hone, focus or somehow support the huge scope
established all too quickly, Season 10 could still be a very welcome
revival. But after one hour, I seem stuck in a strange place of wishing
there were more episodes coming — giving them more time to work out the
kinks — and wishing we would’ve never awoken this massive beast at all.
While things could get better, they could also get a lot worse.” - Indiewire
