People Outside the Mosque
A man walked into the mosque with a bag full of fuel, as the people were waiting for the prayer to begin. He then threw the bag to the center of the building, an eyewitness told a local broadcaster, which was cited by BBC.
The imam, 46, died, in spite of the attempts made by the 50 people gathered there and the firefighters to resuscitate him. A second person was injured. A suspect was apprehended near the mosque, according to La Derniere Heure.
British Daily Mail reports that the imam sacrificed his life as he was trying to save the life of a worshipper in the mosque. One man was said to be arrested in the assault on the mosque in the Anderlecht district of Brussels. The man was said by the spokesman for the Brussels prosecutor office to be 48 years old and Muslim.
The spokesman said that the man had a knife and an axe which he pulled out when he entered the mosque. He spread petrol in order to scare the worshippers. The man had been locked in a room by worshippers before authorities got to him. Police said no other person was sought in connection to the attack.
