Living in a country well known as a tourist destination does not mean you have no interest in learning about other destinations. Recognizing the importance of the mobility of passengers, the Secretary of Tourism of the Federal District of Mexico, Alejandro Rojas Diaz Duran, inaugurated the new headquarters of the Ministry of Tourism Office of Spain in Mexico City this mid-November.
In his role as guest of honor, Rojas spoke to all those present at the opening ceremony. He said that Spain is a “shining example” for the world in tourism production. In his opinion, Mexico can learn a lot from how Spain has made efforts in the area of tourism, and should bet on the twinning and the shared history of both nations, in pursuit of mutual benefit.
In the new office, located on the Petrarca street on number 240, in Colonia Polanco, gathered government officials for tourism in Spain and local tourism entrepreneurs. The idea was to agree on how to invest on the increase of tourist flows in both directions and a promising future for both nations.
Also present was the Ambassador of Spain in Mexico, Manuel Alabat. According to Alabat, tourism is, for Spain, “a state policy” that has contributed to the positioning of this country in the world as the fifth nation in the number of tourists received. “Tourism is part of what today is called the white power of the States, one that is not based on the military might but in a series of intangibles, among which is also tourism,” said Alabat.
In the words of Alabat, tourism “has meant the opening of the Spanish mind to the world, at a time when 50 million Spanish lived very enclosed in themselves. We have modernized and I would say the current character of the Spanish has been very influenced by what came out. I think these are things that Mexico could use because it is a country very similar to ours.”
Antonio Bernabé Renedo, director general of the Ministry of Tourism of Spain, said Mexican nationals also have encouraged the trend of growth of tourism in Spain, with 300,000 Mexican having visited Spain for tourism during the last year. This time, Spain wants to do something in return to thank Mexico for the promotion of Spain as a destination for the Mexicans.
Recalling that Spain and the entire euro zone are now affected by a great crisis, said Bernabé, tourism, however, has been an area in which Spain has shown enormous strength, with a growth of 8% in the last year, at the same time as the country was experiencing one of the worst moments in the history of its economy.
As for the near future, Bernabé predicted that “this year we will receive 57 million international tourists, the tourism expenditure will grow even more than the 8 percent it has already, and tourism will contribute substantially to cover the trade deficit.” Continuing his argument, Bernabé said that “thanks to tourism, Spain has 43 heritage sites declared by UNESCO, just below Italy, and has a gastronomy which ishighly appreciated worldwide.”
With lots of tourism in both directions, the effect that installing the Office of the Ministry of Tourism of Spain in Mexico City will have in the tourism industry in both nations remains to be seen. Stay tuned!
