Chelsea has grabbed the clearest win of the night when the Blues thwarted Genk 5-0 last night on Stamford Bridge in the third day of the UEFA Champions League group stage.
Torres scored a double for Andre Villas Boas’s side, including his first one within the European competition, while Raul Meireles also scored his first one since arriving in London. Ivanovic got his name on the scoreboard with three minutes left in the first game, while Salomon Kalou closed the meeting with a fifth one in the second part.
As expected, the hosts dominated the game at all facets, managing to score their first two goals within three minutes. The Belgian champions were the first to put pressure on Cech’s goal in the third minute through De Bruyne whose dangerous delivery was saved by the Czeck keeper with his feet. Just five minutes later, Meireles brought the opener with a tremendous shot from 20 yards.
The Portuguese, former Liverpool player, was picked in a very free area only to arrange the ball and strike it into the right hand bottom corner. Previous to that, Torres hit the post after being perfectly served by the same Meireles on the edge of the box. But the Spaniard did manage to score his first Champions League goal three minutes later, following a three pass action the finish of which saw Lampard play the striker on the edge of the box.
Genk were the first to concede a yellow card through Hyland, while Chelsea picked their first one in the 18th minute through David Luiz who was cautioned by the referee for a foul on Tozser. Florent Malouda edged his first goal in the 21st minute when the French winger started a personal action only to be blocked by Borre.
A couple of minutes later, the same Malouda got closer to the goal after being perfectly found by Torres. Unfortunately, the French hit it straight into the side netting to the dismay of the Portuguese coach. Torres completed his double in the 28th minute following a great pass from Meireles who delivered the cross from the right. The Spaniard beat his mark to head it home from ten yards or so.
De Bruyne neared his first goal in the 30th minute when the Genk striker penetrated the Blues box only to be denied by David Luiz whose intervention hindered the visitors of maculating the sheet. Frank Lampard got his first chance to score three minutes later, following a good combinative play from both Torres and Meireless the finish of which saw the midfielder head it wide.
De Bruyne was then blocked by Bosingwa as the Belgians were still struggling for a break through. Luiz earned Chelsea a well placed free kick which the same Brazilian hit straight at the keeper. Torres and Anelka developed a great build up in the 41st minute but the French mocked the chance with a shot wide from good position.
One minute later Pudil conceded his first yellow card for a trip on Anelka. Malouda took the responsibility for the set piece, delivering a perfect cross inside the box from where Ivanovic headed it home into the right hand post. The half time went 4-0 as things looked clear as possible.
Villas Boas replaced Raul Meireles with Paulo Ferreira early in the second term. Petr Cech made a tremendous save in the 55th minute, denying the same and only dangerous De Bruyne who looked for the target with a range shot.
A controversial moment saw Lampard go down inside the box, but the referee let the game move on despite the Blues penalty claims. The Chelsea symbol then made way for Kalou in what would prove to be an inspired move. On the other side, coach Mario Been also made a change, introducing Ndabashinze for Barda in the 71st minute.
Two minutes later, the newly introduced Kalou made it 5-0 following an intense pressure inside the Genk box. Torres headed a cross from the right straight at the keeper who saved the ball as far as the Ivorian who put it home with a half volley from close range.
Bosingwa departed in the 82nd minute, making way for Alex, who has not gathered too many appearances this new season. Genk then trplaced Jelle Vossen with Nwanganga. However, it finished 5-0 as Chelsea have gone top of the group E with seven points. The Belgians, by contrast, lie foot of the table with one point.
The same night Bayer Leverkusen overcame Valencia 2-1 at home to go one point behind the Blues. Chelsea will next meet the same Genk away on November 1.
Said Petr Cech after the game: “There were a few more mistakes coming from them under pressure and we scored more goals. I think 5-0 is a really good result. We didn’t allow them to come into the game and score. This is always important if you can kill the game off and keep the clean sheet as well.”
