Gunman Opens Fire on US Embassy In Bosnia, Wounds One
Serbian Gunman
A gunman on Saturday opened fire at the US embassy in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, injuring one cantonal police officer. The attack was deemed by the Bosnian authorities as a “terrorist attack” and the man who was apprehended is considered an ultraconservative Muslim from Serbia.
The Bosnian Cantonal Police said that after the man was arrested they were looking for possible co-conspirators which would have helped him attack the embassy. They also revealed that during the capture the assailant was injured. He is said to have been given medical assistance at the spot and to have then been taken to the hospital. The man is expected to be released from the hospital into police custody on Sunday.
One eye witness said that the shooting spree lasted for ten minutes, and that it sounded like an automatic weapon.
The man was captured at the end of a 30-minute standoff, and were able to identify him as Mevlid Jasarevic, 23, a member of the Wahhabi sect from the city of Novi Pazar in Serbia.
He is said to have been crossing the border earlier in the day, and to have been in possession of two grenades at the time he was apprehended by the Bosnian Cantonal Police.
He was under Serbia Police investigation for having produced a large knife during a visit of the American ambassador in Serbia to Novi Pazar. The mayor of Sarajevo said that the man got off the bus with a Kalashnikov on him and started shooting at the embassy.
The Muslim member of the Bosnian collective presidency denounced the attack as a terrorist attack and called for a speedy investigation into the matter, adding that the United States was a proven friend of the country and such an attack on their embassy was unwarranted.
The Croatian member of the presidency added that the attack on the US embassy was an attack on Bosnia and Herzegovina too. US State Department however refrain from describing it as a terrorist attack. Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that the shooting scratched the exterior wall of the embassy building.
Nuland said that this attack had no impact on the plans of the United States to support Bosnia. She reminded that the United States were a friend of the Bosnian people.
The attack on the American embassy comes the same day as the Palestinian Foreign Minister comes to Sarajevo to convince the country to vote in favor of the Palestinian bid for statehood.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council and a vote in favor of the statehood could help the Palestinian cause, but the Bosnian presidency, which is a tripartite body composed of a Serbian, a Croatian and a Muslim, representing each community in the country, are still divided on how to vote.
Analysts consider that the attack on the embassy may play into the hands of those who have always demanded that the multi-national state be dismembered. It also comes at a time when the Bosnians make significant efforts to show that their country is safe of terrorism.
Wahhabism is an orientation within Islam, considered as ultra-conservative by the other Islamic sects, and stresses out the doctrine of the Uniqueness of God and the need to purge Islamic morale of all the innovations.
Wahhabism does not agree with honoring of the saints, with tomb visitation and with shrines. The sect is very popular in Saudi Arabia, and is also seen in other Muslim countries as Salafi.
