Michael Schumacher reminded of the good old days on Friday when the German set the best time in the first free practice at the Korean Grand Prix.
The veteran spent ten laps on the track, setting the best one at two minutes and 2,784 seconds. Current world champion Sebastian Vettel, who has already become the youngest world champion ever, came second on Friday morning, just 0,056 seconds behind his conational. Force Indian provided the biggest surprise through both Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil who were 0,0128 and 0,357 seconds behind the leader.
Sebastien Buemi came fifth with a 0,398 second gap, being followed by Kamui Kobayashi with a 0,508 second one. McLaren failed to shine too bright on the rainy day as Lewis Hamilton, who has won two titles so far this year, came seventh, 0,607 seconds behind Schumacher. German’s team mate Nico Rosberg set the eighth best time, coming one second and a half behind the former world leader.
Mark Webber, who has not won a title this year, came tenth, 2,399 seconds behind Schumacher, while Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa spent just five and one lap respectively on the track.
Concerning the second free practice, it was won by Lew Hamilton who set a one minute and 50,828 second time, a much better one than Schumacher’s. Team mate Jenson Button, who is also chasing his third title in South Korea, came 0,104 seconds behind his conational. Hamilton declared McLaren will try to hinder Vettel of claiming yet another pole on Sunday when the German will be chasing his 13th one of the year.
“Jenson showed in the last race that we can be very, very competitive. Whether or not we can outdo them in qualifying, which has not been done all year, will be interesting… Again, on a Friday we don’t know what they are doing so today doesn’t mean anything. But I think we are quick,” he said.
Vettel came third in the second session, 1,818 seconds behind Hamilton, while Fernando Alonso was 0,072 seconds slower than the German. Mark Webber set a much better time, coming fifth with a 2,221 second gap and Toro Rosso impressed through Jaime Alguersuari who came sixth after 25 laps.
Ferrari’s Felipe Massa came just behind him, being followed by Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg and Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi. In contrast with the first session, Schumacher failed to keep the pace, coming 14th in the second session, 4,137 seconds behind the leader, something which might dispel Mercedes’ hopes for a podium position.
However, the Sunday race, as well as the last three ones of the season, are expected to be some meaningless ones, given Vettel’s title defence. The German has already secured the top spot in the world rankings for the second time in a row when he came third in last week’s Japanese Grand Prix.
The 24 year old has gathered 324 points so far this year, having Jenson Button well behind him with 210 points. Even so, Vettel showed on Friday he is still hungry for more points, if not titles. He has won nine titles so far this season, last occasion at the Singapore event.
