Jordanian King Abdullah II appointed on Monday a new prime minister after Maarouf al-Bakhit resigned amidst accusations that he was to slow in implementing reforms. The new prime minister is Awn al-Khasawneh, a judge at the International Court of Justice.
The development comes a day after a group of members of the parliament had demanded that the prime minister resign after failing to implement the reforms promised by the king himself earlier this year, when the Arab Spring arrived in Amman and the unrest threatened to engulf the country.
On that occasion, the king ransacked the government led by Samir Rifai on February 1, following the first protests. The analysts said that it is customary in Jordan that the king dismiss the government and the prime minister any time some crisis occurs. The reason for that is that the grievances of the people must not corrode the reputation of the royal family.
King Abdullah II also appointed a new chief of intelligence services, Major General Faysal Shubaki. The king sent a letter to the new prime minister, in which he tells him that he is appointed as prime minister in order to bring reform and modernization in the country.
In February the king entrusted the new prime minister with forming a new government, and in April he entrusted a former prime minister with reviewing the constitution and implementing other laws that must be keeping pace with the demands of the people.
The king also demanded that a panel should be created to develop balance between the institutions in the country.
Even so, the protests continued in Jordan, and the most important demand was for reforms to be implemented. Protesting against the king of Jordan is illegal in this country, but protesting against the government is perfectly legal.
