"Landep News"
It has been a year Monday since the North Korean people became acquainted with the heir apparent of the country, as his father Kim Jong-il presented him for the first time at a congress of the party that rules the Communist country, the only political party of the country.
A year ago, Kim Jong-eun, a young man in his late 20s, was created a four-star general by the military leadership, and thus became the representative of the army at that congress, which, considering the power structure of the “hermit kingdom,” means that the young presidential son has the backing of the most important institution of the country.
It also means that the regime’s leader is about to be kept on check by the military, and that his rule is going to be under the supervision of the generals.
Before he was presented to his country a year ago, Kim Jong-il had been completely unknown to his people or to the Western media. It took weeks for the news agencies all over the world to find a picture of him. No one knew him in North Korea, which was in the end in accordance to the Asian Communist tradition.
Before he was presented to the people, the incumbent president Kim Jong-il took a trip to China, where he visited the primary school where his father, Kim Il-sung, the founder of the Communist republic of North Korea, attended as a kid.
By that action, Kim wanted to put pressure on the military and the political leaders of the country, who were reminded what the Kim family had done for the country, thus making the rejection of his son virtually impossible.
Since last year, the state media went to an entire process of confecting a personality for the future ruler of North Korea. Thus, he is believed to have staged the deadly artillery attack on a South Korean island, which almost brought the two countries on the brink of war.
He appears with his father at important events, and in work visits to farms and factories, and took temporary responsibility of head of state while his father traveled to China and Russia.
It is difficult to fathom and confirm the mythmaking way of the North Korean media, given that the information is strictly controlled by the state, and every possible unauthorized release could lead to hard years of labor in prison or even worse.
However, the South Korean analysts consider that judging by the way the things happened to Kim Jong-il it is expected that soon enough he may publish a biography.
The North Koreans are being told already that the young son graduated Kim Il-sung Military University, even though he actually graduated some Switzerland college, where he stayed for a few years.
He is also said to speak fluently a few foreign languages, including English, and that he is a genius in computers and technology. The North Koreans do not know though the name of his mother nor do they know the marital status of he who is expected to lead them.
It is said that next year it will be a momentous year for the nation as the founder Kim Il-sung’s centennial will be celebrated. By a strange twist of events, Kim Jong-il will celebrate 70 years of life and the young Kim Jong-eun may be expected to celebrate 30 years. That is considered by South Korean analysts as a moment when the people may learn more about him.
While Kim Il-sung is referred to as “the divine president,” and his father as “the great president,” young Kim Jong-eun is revered as the “illustrious general,” although he has held the job for no more than a year and distinguished himself by nothing, except maybe for the shelling of the South Korean island, which sent a chilling vibration throughout Asian countries.
The urge to promote little Kim Jong-eun came after the health condition of the incumbent president has steadily deteriorated, leading to the conclusion that he may not live long anymore.
For that reason, it is expected that Kim, probably pressed by China’s Hu Jintao, would have wanted to make sure that in case he died the state did not descend into chaos. China, Japan and Western countries are preoccupied that his demise could lead to a power struggle that would be very dangerous, considering the nuclear ambitions of the country.
Kim is also attempting to solve the nuclear problem, by fostering the resumption of talks in the six-party format, so that a denuclearization be achieved, most likely in exchange for food, given that NKorea is going through a terrible economic mayhem.
On the other hand, South Korea is making progress in fostering a reunification program, which would raise the question whether “the illustrious general” would have a country to run after his father’s demise or he would ensure the transition toward an unified Korea.
