Egypt Above All on Wednesday launched a campaign to convince the Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the leader of the Egyptian Higher Council for the Armed Forces, the military council that rules the country, to run for the president amid many calls for the military to step down and hand over the power to a civilian government.
The campaign is called “A popular demand for stability” and on behalf of this campaign hundreds of posters were seen in the main cities, Cairo and Alexandria, presenting Tantawi in his uniform with the national flag in the background.
The campaign is said to have been programmed to start a month ago, but it was postponed because of the conflicts that engulfed the country in the beginning of the month. The campaigners said that they represented the voice of the people who are in majority and hope to see Tantawi the next president of the country.
They added that Tantawi was the best candidate for the job and that he was the only one to lead the country to real democracy.
The leaders of the group said that the people in Egypt did not appreciate the candidates to the presidency that entered the race nor those who speak in the name of the revolution. The campaigners also place emphasis on the fact that he has supported the revolution and fought against former regime’s attempts to thwart it.
They said that a million signatures in his favor will be collected during the campaign which started in Cairo but will go national.
The main reason of the campaign is said to be to apply pressure on the field marshal to the purpose of convincing him to run for the presidency. They said that he was a military and could by no means be associated to the former regime.
Tantawi used to be the defense minister of the Hosni Mubarak regime, and was called by a US cable Mubarak’s “poodle.”
The presidential elections are supposed to happen in Egypt late in 2012 or early in 2013. The military council is about 18 month later than the former timetable the military government had set for the election of the new president.
The parliamentary elections were set to occur in November, when a Constituent Assembly is about to be elected, which will draft a new constitution for the country.
The military regime led by Tantawi came under hard criticism from the activists who blamed it for the way it handled the transition, for the way it implemented reforms, disbanded the former regime and especially for the way it handled the sectarian fight earlier this year, when 20 Christian protesters were killed, why the regime was suspected of having covered the trace of the assassins.
The idea of running for the president was offered by a picture in the newspapers where he was presented walking through the center in Cairo in civilian attire.
Tantawi also had a very important saying in the process against the former president Hosni Mubarak, when he testified during the last session causing the process to be halted as the judge were refused by the families of the people killed during the revolution.
