Seattle needed ten terms to edge East leaders New York Yankees 2-1 last night at the Safeco Field. Mariners kept the minimal advantage for four innings, only to be leveled and pushed into three extra terms in the seventh one.
The two sides kept the sheet clean in the first three terms, but the fourth one brought the hosts the opener. Carp scored the first points thanks to a wild pitch by Nova. Yankees managed to fight back and even the situation three innings later. Swisher fired a 369 foot homerun with two innings remaining, giving his side the chance to stay in touch with the win.
Unfortunately for the leaders, they were denied by another homer hit in the 12th term by Rodriguez. “We lost a lot of one-run games on this trip and that’s the hard part. We lot three games by one run each. But our club has been pretty good to win two out of three. You’ve got to keep doing that,” said a disappointed manager Joe Girardi.
Mariners are foot of the table in the West with a .416 record which includes 62 wins and 87 defeats, the victory over the East leaders being their fourth in the past ten games and 37th at home. As for Yankees, they remain top spot in their Conference, with Boston Red Sox four gamesback behind, having gone .608 so far this season.
The percentage features 90 wins and 58 losses, the defeat to Mariners being their fifth in the last ten games and 1st on the road.
Milwaukee Brewers 2 – 6 Colorado Rockies
Colorado stunned the Central leaders last night at the Miller Park where the visitors overcame a one point deficit set in the opening term and set the pace most of the time. Hart brought the first lead for the hosts after Morgan grounded out to shortstop in what seemed to be an easy day for the favorites.
The second inning went scoreless for both sides, while the third one saw Fowler even the situation following Ellis’ single. Gonzalez then hit a 447 foot homerun and Ellis made it 3-1, something which gave the visitors a lot of confidence for the next terms. Rosario also fired a 385 footer in the fourth inning as Colorado were starting to look as the main favorites.
The fifth inning brought the same Rockies a couple of more points. At first, Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly for Fowler’s fifth point and then Ellis made it 6-1 after Giambi doubled to right but also thanks to a throwing error committed by fielder Hart. As for Milwaukee, they could only score a second consolation point in the sixth term when Morgan cut the deficit to four points, without being able to resuscitate his side, as well.
Despite the win, Colorado lie second from the bottom in the West with a .473 record which includes 70 wins and 78 defeats, the victory over Brewers being their fifth in the past ten games and 32nd on the road. Brewers, by contrast, remain first in the Central with a .580 percentage featuring 87 wins and 63 defeats. The loss to Colorado was their sixth in the past ten games and 23rd at home.
Cincinnati Reds 7 – 2 Chicago Cubs
Cincinnati have started to build streak when they eased past Cubs last night at the Great American Ball Park. Reds started the meeting in high style, being put into a three point quick lead only in the second round. Hernandez hit a 403 foot homerun as Francisco and Stubbs pointed a double as well.
The third inning brought the hosts a couple of more points. Francisco singled to right allowing both Votto and Bruce to make it 5-0 and draw a comprehensive win at the Park. Moreover, Renteria singled to center for Hernandez’s sixth one as things started to look clear as possible.
Chicago could only cut the deficit to four points in the sixth round. Pena doubled to left as Castro made it 1-6 with Ramirez getting to third, while Soriano grounded out to shortstop for Ramirez’s second one. Finally, Heisey closed the meeting with a 391 foot homerun fired in the eighth inning.
Reds are third in the Central with a .490 record including 73 wins and 76 defeats, the victory over Chicago being their fifth in the past ten games and 39th at home. The defeat to Cincinnati was their second in a row, fourth in the past ten games and 44th on the road.
