Giggs brings United point at Benfica
Last term’s UEFA Champions League finalists were led 0-1 in the 25th minute when Cardozo brought the hosts a precious opener they couldn’t take advantage of. Giggs evened the situation three minutes before the half time, the second part going scoreless for both sides.
Benfica got their first big chance through Gaitan whose dangerous shot made Lindegaard work hard to keep the sheet clean in the 17th minute. Cardozo missed his first opportunity one minute later when the Portuguese’s striker struck it straight at the United keeper who had a busy start on Da Luz.
Benfica opened the score in the 25th minute through the same Cardozo who was perfectly picked with a long cross from the left. The striker turned Evans to put it home into the right hand far post from 15 yards or so. The first yellow card was conceded by Rooney who took down Artur in the 27th minute.
Aimar was also shown a yellow card with five minutes left from the first half for a trip on the same Rooney. Two minutes later Ryan Giggs leveled the score with a screamer from outside the box. The Welsh was picked on the right only to drive the bal between two defenders and thunder it straight into the top left corner.
The half time went 1-1, the game remaining open to any result. Ten minutes into the second part, Aimar neared the second one for the hosts, but his shot went just wide of the post to his own dismay. Coach Jesus Jorge made his first change in the 56th minute, introducing Nolito for Amorim. The newly introduced was given a yellow card just five minutes after entering the pitch for a tough challenge on Park.
Rooney got his first big chance late in the 64th minute. Ryan Giggs beat his marks to feed the striker whose finish was saved by Artur. Carrick was the fourth to pick a yellow card following a trip on Gaitin. Nolito tried his luck with a tricky shot Lindegaard managed to save. Emerson also neared the second one for Benfica, following a one-two with Nolito, the finish of which was blocked by the United keeper.
