Juan Mata has made an impressive debut, scoring the third goal in Chelsea’s 3-1 win against Norwich on Saturday. Didier Drogba suffered an ugly head injury in the 65th minute and was taken to the hospital right afterwards.
Bosingwa opened the score with a screamer early in the game, but Chelsea were leveled minutes into the second part. Lampard’s penalty and Mata’s late goal brought the Blues the hard fought victory which propel them top spot alongside Wolverhamtpon Wanderers and Liverpool. The first occasion belonged to the home side as Ramires’ range shot was saved by keeper Ruddy.
Just four minutes later Bosingwa brought the opener following a personal action the finish of which ended into the top right hand corner. Norwich, who would create plenty of clear occasions, first threatened Hilario’s goal in the 18th minute when holt was picked inside the box, only to be denied a the death by the Blues defence.
Torres developed a tremendous action four minutes later. The Spaniard beat his mark outside the box but his attempt of feeding Droga was dispelled by keeper’s intervention. Hilario then blocked Chris Martin who was fed in good position by Hoolahan, in what should have been at least a more difficult test for the Chelsea keeper, if not a leveler.
Coach Paul Lambert replaced Whitbread with Anthony Pilkington. Corfts was the second to get booked for a tough challenge on Droga. Malouda got his first big chance in the 44th minute after Bosingwa delivered a long cross from the right the French winger reached on the edge of the box from where he thundered a volley Ruddy tipped away.
The half time went 1-0 but Boas’ side were still struggling to keep the advantage. Chelsea started the second part with yet another big chance. The hosts won a corner on the right, the delivery meeting Terry’s header and then Pilkington who also headed the ball away. Torres picked a yellow card in the 56th minute for a foul on Barnett and fights with the referee.
Norwich made their second change in the 60th minute when Hoolahan departed for Steve Morison. Just three minutes later, the visitors were given the leveler through Holt who took advantage of a very poor keeping from Hilario whose deflection was intercepted by the Norwich striker who lifted it home past Hilario and flying Terry.
But one minute later, the stadium went into silence after Drogba was knocked down by keeper Ruddy who hit the Ivorian in the head while attempting to tip the ball. Chelsea’s striker underwent medical care for nearly ten minutes and then was taken to the hospital.
Anelka replaced the Ivorian right afterwards, while Mata came in for Malouda. Norwich were chasing even the winner and they had a big chance to score it in the 75th minute. Morison started an individual action on the left the finish of which went just over the bar. The 80th minute brought instead a penalty for the hosts. Ramires was fouled inside the box by Ruddy in what appeared to be a simulation.
The referee showed both the white spot and the red card for the keeper. Lampard converted the penalty past newly introduced Declan Rudd to make it 2-1. Newly transferred Lukaku was also introduced for Torres in the 84th minute. Ivanovic then was given a golden chance to make it three. Lampard delivered a perfect cross across the face of the goal the unmarked Serb headed it into the stands in what was the biggest goal chance of the game.
Mata had the last word on the Stamford Bridge as the Spaniard, who wore the Blues jersey for the first time in an official game, scored the last goal, making an impressive debut which suggests a promising future in West London.
Said Andre Villas Boas after the game: “Norwich didn’t play particularly well but created problems with direct play and a good fighting spirit. This is their philosophy and it suits them. For a team that came with two back to back promotions shows the quality of work Paul Lambert is doing. Norwich has a role to play in the Premiership and did just that against Stoke last week.”
The Blues have also announced that Drogba, who suffered a mild concussion, is to be released from hospital on Saturday night. Chelsea have now gone top of the standings with seven points in three games, while Norwich lie 14th with two points. The Blues will next meet Sunderland next Saturday and Norwich meet WBA on Sunday.
