New Haven after qualifier Petra Cetkovska ousted second favorite and French Open winner Li Na in the semi finals.
World number 40 edged the Chinese in three sets 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 and needed nearly three hours to secure a final berth, her first one of the season. The Czech broke Li Na seven times and saved six other break points coming from the opposite side. Cetkovska, who had previously stunned another seeder Marion Bartoli, grabbed the first set in nearly half an hour, but things got complicated since the second term started.
Li Na leveled the score by winning a late break which allowed her to push the meeting into a third set decider, as well. The two exchanged three breaks in the second round, but it was the Chinese to put more pressure and threaten with a late comeback.
Concerning the third term, it saw both players both convert four out of their nine break points and go head to head until the breaker. The two continued their battle, extending the tie break to a a 20 mini break run the finish of which provided Cetkovska as winner.
She thus beat Li Na 11-9 to make the progress and set yet another seed clash with main favorite Wozniacki. Cetkovska won 43 percent of service points, 58 on return and hit 51 winners, compared to Li Na’s 42 service percentage, 57 return one and 50 winners. That was also the second meeting between the Czech and Li Na, the head to head series going 1-1 at this moment.
“At first I got really nervous. I was really stressed. The hand, the legs, everything slowed down. And then when she had match point, I was just trying to stay calm, because it was just a couple minutes ago it was me who had match points, now her. I had to tell myself it might be me again,” said the Czech after the big win.
Czech’s next opponent Wozniacki ousted Francesca Schiavone in two sets 7-6, 6-3 and nearly two hours. The 21 year old world leader was very close to facing an early scare against the Italian who managed to push her into the tie break in the first set. The two exchanged a couple of breaks, one each, before sailing through a late crucial run.
Wozniacki dominated the breaker, managing to set a five point lead and thus capture the first set at the death. As for the second set, it belonged to the same Danish who broke her opponent three times out of 13 tries, and only conceded a service. The two met for the seventh time and now the head to head series between the two is led 5-2 by the blonde. Wozniacki had previously defeated the world number eight at this term’s Brussels event.
The Dane had previously ousted Polona Hercog 6-3, 6-0 in the second term and Christina McHale 7-5, 6-3 in the third one. En route to the final, Cetkovska has also defeated Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the second term and Ayumi Morita 6-2, 6-2 in the opener. Tomorrow, the two will meet for the first time.
