"Landep News"
The police statement alluded that the state had the name of the mastermind who actually ordered Pavlyuchenkov to kill the famous journalist, but they said that it was too early in the course of the investigation to release this information to the press.
Pavlyuchenkov is said to have hired a team, obtained the weapons and arranged that the journalist be watched and surveyed until she was shot dead in the lobby of her apartment, on the birthday of former president Vladimir Putin.
Politkovskaya was one of the most serious critics of the regime, and for many people her assassination was seen as a crackdown of the regime on her.
Some consider that the Pavlyuchenkov’s arrest is premature, considering that it may be possible that the police wouldn’t have what it takes to make a case against him, and that the announcement and the arrest of the former lieutenant colonel could be no more than an attempt to show that Medvedev is taking very seriously the promises to uphold the human rights.
Pavlyuchenkov has been able to mislead the police for a while by pretending to be the one to give them information about the case. The police thought at the time that he was not sincere, but now the police said they had enough evidence to arrest him.
Politkovskaya is one of many journalists to be killed, or brutally beaten in Russia over the last decades. Her case was never solved because it is thought that no one wanted to reach to the mastermind.
It is possible that the case may never be elucidated, and it could be only a political weapon in the elections to come.
Anna Politkovskaya was shot on October 7, 2006 in the lobby of her apartment. She was the one to document the brutal crackdown in Chechnya, about which the Kremlin said it was a “pacification mission.”
Her assassination was very steadily criticized by the Western democracies, and was associated by many with Putin’s regime.
