Manchester United have captured the leading position in the Premier League standings after thwarting Bolton Wanderers 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Reebok stadium.
Rooney’s hat trick and Hernandez’s double brought Alex Ferguson’s side yet another comprehensive win in the new season. The Mexican striker opened the score early in the fifth minute following a three pass play from the Red Devils. Nani picked the youngster, who was making his first start this season, with a perfect cross only to put it home from close range past keeper Jaaskelainen.
The hosts broke back immediately through Eagles whose shot was saved by Rooney on the line in what could have been an early leveler for Owen Coyle’s side. Untied was forced to make an early change after injured Tom Cleverley asked his replacement in the tenth minute. Alex Ferguson introduced Michael Carrick, the game becoming a very tense one.
Bolton were the first to conceded a yellow card through Davies who took down Evra in the 14th minute. De Gea first got into big trouble in the 20th minute when Klasnic struck a dangerous shot from the edge of the box only to be denied by the newly arrived Spaniard. Mark Davis was the second to be cautioned with a yellow in the 21st minute for a foul on Nani.
Rooney started to build his hat trick just a minute later. Newly arrived Jones fed the striker with a tremendous long cross form the right Rooney put it home past the Bolton keeper in what seemed to be an identical goal.
Things got much worse a couple of minutes later when the same Rooney completed his double with yet another superb finish from inside the box. Jones beat his marks only to be denied by Jaaskelainen who managed to save the ball as far as Rooney who converted the follow up into a 3-0 lead.
Davis missed a big chance in the 30th minute, but the game was still dominated by the hosts who were chasing even a fourth one. The half time went 3-0 as things looked clear as possible for both sides. As for the second part, it started with Bolton’s two big chances. At first Klasnic thundered a 25 yarder straight at De Gea anf then Davies was denied by the same former Atletico Madrid keeper.
Anderson tried his luck with a free kick from range Jaaskelainen managed to hold with ease. The 60th minute brought Untied a fourth one through the same Hernandez who took advantage of a deflection from Bolton defence to hit it home from ten yards or so.
Ferguson made two changes in the 61st minute, introducing Ryan Giggs and Chris Smalling for Ashley Young and Jonny Evans respectively. Coyle also made two substitution replacing Chris Eagles and Kevin Davies with Darren Pratley and former Liverpool player David Ngog.
Rooney then completed his hat trick with a superb shot from the edge of the box. Nani penetrated the box and fed the striker with a low pass. Tuncay replaced Ivan Klasnic in the 75th minute for Bolton but that would not change anything.
Manchester have moved top of the table with 12 points in four games. They share the leading position with local rivals City who beat Wigan 3-0 on Saturday.
Said Rooney after the game: “We always know Bolton is a difficult place to come. We got an early goal and kicked on from there and it could have been more. First start with Chicharito this season and both scoring, that’s great… I had a long time to rest and get a good pre-season under my belt.”
