Andujar reaches Kitzbuhel second term
Eighth seed Pablo Andujar overcame a one set deficit to Lukas Rosol whom the Spaniard edged in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the Kitzbuhel first term to set an all-Spanish clash with Albert Ramos.
This term’s Stuttgart finalist Andujar exchanged 16 breaks with Rosol who conceded nine service to the Spanish opponent who dropped the opener after conceding one service by himself. The second set saw the favorite come from behind and set a a three game lead thanks to a couple of an early points which helped him stay in touch with the victory and thus push the game into decider.
Even more than that, Andujar’s game was improving by each game in the third set as the Spaniard managed to pick three more breaks and only conceded one to power through to a hard fought victory. Andujar finished the game with six aces, six double faults and a 61 first serve percentage, winning at the same time 60 points of service points.
On the other side, Rosol came up with a 60 first serve percent, four double faults and a 40 return percentage of return points, winning 58 percent of service points, something which cost him the victory he should have stayed in touch with from the very beginning.
Next up for Adujar is compatriot Albert Ramos who also needed three sets to get rid of Igor Andreev whom he ousted 6-0, 6-7, 6-4 to set his first ever meeting with the world number 46. Ramos broke the Russian six times out of 13 tries, managing to keep the sheet clean throughout the entire opener. He hit at the same time six aces, finishing the game also with a 58 first serve percentage, a 46 return one and eight double faults.
He won 61 percent of service points, compared to Andreev who converted just 54 percent. The Russian committed four double faults and was unable to convert more than a couple of break points, though he created 11 chances. He managed though to make it 1-1 after edging his opponent in the tie break but dropped back to a poor pace in the third.
The same day Robin Haase has set a tough meeting with second favorite Feliciano Lopez who has been favored by a BYE in the opening day. Fortunate Dutch made a free progress after Potito Starace abandoned the game at 3-6, 0-2 down. On the same second half of the table, Pere Riba ousted Romania’s Victor Hanescu in two sets 7-6, 6-4 to meet Andreas Seppi of Italy in the second term, who also follows a straight set win against Denis Istomin whom he crashed 6-2, 6-2.
Ivan Ljubicic is also favored by a BYE and will make his debut against either Jerzy Janowicz or Joao Souza of Brazil. Concerning the first half of the draw, defending champion Juan Ignacio Chela is to start the Kitzbuhel event in front of Daniel Gimeno of Spain who has already gabbed an easy win to Dominic Thiem of Austria whom he eliminated in two easy sets, 6-4, 6-2.
This year’s Halle champion Philipp Kohlschreiber ousted veteran and 43-year-old Thomas Muster 6-3, 6-0. The German broke the former top ten player six times and only conceded one service in the opener. Philipp finished the game with a 62 first serve percentage, a 60 one on return, winning 65 percent of service points, while Muster came up with one break, a 35 return percentage and a 51 one on first serve. The Austrian also won 40 percent of service points, something which cost him the clear victory.
Kohlschreiber will next meet Albert Montanes of Spain who follows a 6-3, 6-2 win against Javier Marti. Montanes picked five breaks from Marti against whom he won 67 percent of service points and 55 on return. His compatriot finished the game with a poor 33 return percentage, two break points and four double faults, something which only helped him to resist nearly one hour and a half in front of the wolrd number 50.
On the same first half of the draw Antonio Veic of Croatia will meet Andreas Haider Maurer of Austria, while Filippo VOlandri is to make the debut in front of Marcel Granollers who follows a great week in Gstaad where the Spaniard won his second career title. Santiago Giraldo is to face Daniel Brands of Germany, the winner between the two being expected to meet Fabio Fognini of Italy who starts the event as fourth favorite.
