Yanks thwart Oakland but stay second
Yankees destroyed Athletics 17-7 last night in New York in what was one of their biggest win of the season, remaining second in the East, two gamesback behind leaders Red Sox.
Almost against the game way, Seattle grabbed the first lead in the first inning through Crisp who scored after Sizemore doubled to right. The second inning found the same visitors doubling their lead through Jackson who put his first into the lead for the last time as a 14-point rally was just about to be provided by a fury New York. Pennington homered a 335 footer, while Suzuki made it 4-14. Crisp then singled to center, allowing Weeks to cut the deficit to nine points, while De Jesus and Suzuki tried to resuscitate their side with a couple of more points scored in the fifth, but still Oakland war far from staying touch with a turnover. The sixth inning went scoreless for both sides, while the seventh one saw Laird and Granderson make it 16-7 following Swisher’s singling to center.
The last word belonged to Cervelli who closed out the game with a 17th point scored from Laird’s singling to center. Said Swisher: “That’s exactly what we needed. The past road trip didn’t go exactly as we wanted it to. Especially with the way the weather was and the way we got our bat going with our fans in the stands it was nice to play the way we did.”
New York are second in the East with a .598 percentage which includes 58 wins and 39 losses, the victory over Athletics being their sixth in the past ten games and 31st at home. As for Oakland, they lie foot of the table in the West with a .434 poor record, the same as Seattle Mariners, featuring 43 wins and 56 defeats, the loss to New York being their sixth in the past ten games and 34th on the road.
Pittsburgh Pirates 4 – 6 St. Louis Cardinals
Pirates lost their leading position after losing to Cardinals last night at the PNC Park where the hosts were dominated and led throughout the entire meeting by the top spot contenders St. Louis who are now just .001 behind Pittsburgh. A sensational start brought the visitors four points in a row scored only in the first inning.
Pujols opened the game with a 411-foot homerun, being followed by Jay who doubled the lead as just. Freese, too, hit a homerun in the same term, while Berkman made it 4-0. Finally, Molina had the last word on PNC, hitting a 408-foot homerun in the eighth inning and giving his side a precious win which keeps them just one gameback behind leaders Brewers.
Cardinals are third din the Central Conference with a .525 record which features 52 wins and 47 defeats, the victory over Pirates being their second ina row, fifth in the past ten games and 27th on the road. Pittsburgh are just above them with a .526 percentage including 51 wins and 46 losses, yesterday’s defeat being the second in a row, fourth in the past ten games 24th at PNC.
Baltimore Orioles 1 – 6 Los Angeles Angels
Angels have extended their winning streak to three successes after upsetting Orioles last night at the Orioles Park where all the points were scored in the last three terms. The first six innings thus went scoreless for both sides, while the seventh one saw Los Angeles take the first lead through Trout. Chicago Cubs 4 – 2 Houston Astros
Cubs overcame a two-point deficit last night at the Wrigely Field where the visitors threatened with a big win but eventually ended up beaten after Chicago’s four-point rally set in the fifth term stunned the Astros who were not able to provide the comeback anymore. The last four terms went clean as Cubs celebrated their 23rd win at home in front of a 40,000 warmly crowd. Despite the win, they remain second from the bottom in the Central with a .400 record including 40 wins and 60 losses, the victory over Houston being their fourth in the past ten games. As for Astros, they lie foot of the table, 20 gamesback behind leaders Brewers and 6.5 behind Cubs, with a .333 record, by far the worst in the league, which features 33 wins and 66 losses, the defeat to Chicago being their 30th on the road, and seventh in the last ten meetings.
Cincinnati Reds 4 – 6 Atlanta Braves
Braves have started to build streak last night a the Great American Ball Park in Ohio where the visitors managed to overcome two minimal deficits in the fist and sixth inning to power through to a hard fought win. The game opened with three straight homers, Cozart being the first to put Reds into the first lead. Cincinnati, by contrast, are fourth in the Central table with a .485 record featuring 48 wins and 51 losses, the defeat to Atlanta being their sixth in the past ten games and 23rd at home.
Cleveland Indians 0 – 3 Chicago White Sox
White Sox managed to keep the sheet clean throughout the entire clash with Indians last night at the Progressive Field where the game was decided in the fifth inning and where Indians conceded their third straight loss. Quentin homered a 407 footer, being while Konerko and Dunn followed him right afterwards with a couple of more points which eventually gave the visitors a clean win, their 27th on the road.
Chicago remain 3.5 gamesback behind Cleveland in the Central with a .485 record including 48 wins and 51 defeats, yesterday’s victory being their fifth in the past ten games. On the other side, Indians are second, 1.5 gamesback behind leaders Detroit with a .485 percentage which features 51 wins and 47 losses, the defeat to White Sox being their sixth in the past ten games.
