Many women in the United States of American suffer from the polycystic ovary syndrome, which is the main cause of infertility nowadays
Although most 8 year old girl are not really worries about whether they are going to get pregnant or not, it seems that 8 is the best age to treat for possible infertility.
According to a new study, it seems that little 8 year old girl who showed sign of possible infertility were treated with a diabetes drug, called metformin. The little girls were given the drug for 4 years and the researchers found that they had less chances of developing the condition later in life. Although no girl of only 8 shows signs of polycystic ovary syndrome, the main cause of infertility among women in the United States of America, the researchers said that they have the precursors already in their body at this young age. “What we have done is chosen an at-risk group and treated them before they have clinical signs of the syndrome,” said the study researcher, Dr. Lourdes Ibáñez from the University of Barcelona. “It’s using the drug in a preventive way instead of a therapeutic way.”
Given that girls who were born with a lower weigh than normal and who develop pubic hair earlier than other girls are more prone to develop the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), Ibáñez and his group of researchers recruited 38 girls who fit this pattern. Half of the girls had to take the diabetes drug for four years, from 8 years to 12 years old, and the other half had to take the drug only for a period of a year. According to the researchers, it seems that the girl who had taken the drug earlier and for a longer period of time had 8 times less chances of developing the condition by the time they were 15 than their peers who had only taken the drug for a year. The researchers also said that they now want to follow their patients until the girls reach the age of 18, in order to see whether their theory really worked or not.
According to what the researchers said, it seems that even though the signs of PCOS can be seen only after puberty hits, it seems that the condition start developing way before that. Furthermore, it seems that it all begins with an excess of insulin in the body. When the insulin hits the ovaries, messing up their hormone production, the male hormones start to build up and they affect the girl’s body in different ways and that is how PCOS happens. Given that metformin treats the insulin imbalance, which can be the main cause of the development of polycystic ovary syndrome, the researchers tried to see whether diabetes drugs could prevent girl from developing this condition which ultimately leads to infertility.
Furthermore, is seems that this diabetes drug is also given to women who are currently trying to have a baby and they find it very difficult. However, this study suggests that earlier intervention would do even much good than starting a treatment with a diabetes drug only after there are signs of infertility.
