The closer the community the more disagreed with nuclear plant

The Indonesian National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN) remains focused on the development plan for nuclear power plants either in the West or South Bangka area, Bangka Belitung Islands Province. The Indonesian government has allocated up to USD 14 million for the preparation of nuclear power plants for 2014.
“West Bangka is preferred because it is closer to Sumatera electricity grid. The distance is less than 20 kilometers,” said Deputy R & D Utilization and Socialization of Nuclear Science BATAN, Taswanda Taryo, to reporters on Tuesday (05/07/2011) in a panel discussion at the Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia (FNCA) in Jakarta.

Taswanda said the construction schedule of the nuclear power plant (NPP) has not been decided yet. According to the regulation, the nuclear power plants owner should be from private sector working together with state owned enterprises (SOEs) or foreign companies.
“South Bangka was also looked for the plant location because it is closer to Java but was not selected because of the distance of more than 300 kilometers to the Java grid,” said Taswanda.
He said there are currently no private parties that put themselves forward as candidates for nuclear power plant operators and owners. In addition to selecting Bangka as the proposed site for the nuclear power plant, there are also another alternative location in Bojonegoro and Banten. “East Kalimantan also offers itself,” said Taswanda.
BATAN head Hudi Hastowo said that BATAN has conducted survey to gauge the community response to the planned nuclear plant. Taswanda said the survey conducted in November 2010 in 22 districts and cities in seven provinces in Java-Bali.
“The survey was done by a a professional survey company. The survey showed, as much as 59.7 percent agree with nuclear power, about 25 percent disagreed, and the rest don’t know” said Taswanda.
The same survey was also conducted in Bangka Belitung with 500 respondents. As many as 35 percent of respondents agreed to the construction of nuclear power plants, 32 percent disagreed and the rest abstained.
“We do not know when this nuclear energy could be realized. What is clear, in the statutory provisions, nuclear energy is allowed to go into the mix power source for the energy policy,” said Taswanda.
