Myanmar has a new president as Prime Minister Thein Sein was elected on Friday as president by the parliament, convened for the first time in many decades in the capital of the country, Naypyidaw.
The parliament also appointed two vice presidents of the union parliament.
The parliament was elected in November 2010, in the first elections to be held free in the last 20 years.
These elections were under heavy criticism from the international community because of the accusations of lacking transparency and freedom.
According to the regime’s legislation, 25 percent of the seats in the parliament are held by the military, which has been in power for decades. According to a recent constitutional provision, the military can appoint at least 100 nominees, which is construed as a way of the regime to tighten the control over the country.
Soon after the elections were held, the regime has released Suu Kyi, the national leader of the opposition, who had been kept under house arrest.

Suu Kyi has been militating ever since for dialogue with the parties in power and with the military hunta, while also addressing the neighboring countries for a change in their attitude toward Myanmar.
China and India are the closest neighbors of the poor south Asian country, and the influence of the two giant countries was felt as they turned a blind eye to the infringement of human rights in Myanmar for the sake of economic advantages.
