Mount Merapi Is Officially No Longer

Mount Merapi disaster emergency period of Mount Merapi eruption which started from Oct. 26 is officially ended today (09/12/10). National Disaster Management Agency (BNBP) has handed over the rehabilitation and reconstruction control to the Yogyakarta and Central Java Provincial Government.
“Although the emergency period has ended, BNPB does not just leave. We will continue to provide assistance to local governments in the transition to later stages of rehabilitation and reconstruction,” said BNPB Disaster Risk Reduction Director Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, today.

Furthermore, Sutopo said he will form a team to assist the local governments during the transition from rehabilitation to reconstruction phase. This phase will begin in early 2011 and is expected to last for 2-3 years.
“Area that will be supported such as preparing temporary shelters victims of eruption, cash for work, and live stock provision,” he said.
In addition, technical teams from the ministries are still going to work, especially to help to overcome the secondary impact of the eruption such as cold lava flood that is now has become a major threat.
Since Mount Merapi erupted on Oct. 26, until December 8 BNPB has recorded total death toll of 379 people and 179 hospitalized. Residents who remained in evacuation are 21,338 people spread over 114 camps. BNPB held the emergency disaster response command since November 5th.
