Linda McMahon, lost Connecticut’s hotly contested U.S. Senate race to longtime state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.
The 64-year-old Blumenthal defeated Republican newcomer Linda McMahon, keeping the seat under Democratic control.
Linda McMahon is the wife of Vince McMahon, a multimillionaire owner of World Wrestling
Entertainment, and spent more than $50 million of her own money on her campaign. WWE has been a point of criticism for Linda McMahon's opponents. She was the company CEO until last fall.
With 3 percent of precincts reporting, Blumenthal had 52 percent of
the vote to McMahon's 47 percent.
Blumenthal will fill the seat now held by Sen. Chris Dodd, who
did not seek re-election.
A Quinnipiac University survey released
Monday showed Blumenthal leading 53 percent to 44 percent among
likely voters.
The race for U.S. Senate was one of several that attracted the most national attention. Vince McMahon became the subject of controversy when he starred in an ad during a live broadcast of ‘WWE Raw’ where he was suddenly awakened from a coma after learning his wife had spent $50 million on her campaign. In the ad, McMahon is seen lying in a hospital bed, wearing a gown covered with "Linda for Senate" bumper stickers. When he stands up, a
campaign sign for her opponent, Democrat Richard Blumenthal, is
covering his buttocks.
A WWE spokesman called the skit a parody.
McMahon also had to be escorted of a Connecticut University campus when a rally got out of hand Monday. The rally at the University of Connecticut ended abruptly when students got
involved in a skirmish. The Republican candidate was visiting the campus in Storrs.
Voting was extended by two hours Tuesday night in about half the
polling places in Connecticut's largest city to allow voters to
cast ballots in precincts that had earlier run out.
