The scandal over the incidental burning of Quran books in Afghanistan continues, as Afghan people still protest against the American troops who did it, prompting the president of the United States of America Barack Obama on Thursday to send a letter to the president of Afghanistan, in which he expressed “deep regret” for the incident, which he called a “genuine mistake.”
Six Afghan people and two foreign soldiers were killed in the first two days as the people protested against the Bagram Air Field military base where the desecration was produced as the American soldiers took the trash out and accidentally threw away in the burning pit some Quran books the inmates in this prison had used during incarceration.
Seven people were reported killed and dozens injured during the protests staged on Thursday. The American commander of the troops in Afghanistan, general John Allen expressed his regret on Monday and said that an inquiry would be launched into the incident.
The president of the United States sent his letter to the Afghan president via the American ambassador to Kabul. In the letter, Obama was promising that an investigation would be conducted to find all responsible for it.
He demanded the president and the Afghan people to accept his “deep apologies,” and conveys the “deep sympathies.” President Hamid Karzai told the members of the Afghan parliament that an American officer was responsible but that the gesture had been done out of ignorance.
On Thursday, the people shouted in the streets “Death To Obama!” and “Death To America!” burning US flags. The incident was speculated by the Taliban, who encouraged the Afghan people to kill all invading forces for their “insulting” the Quran.
In a statement the Taliban told Afghan people that they should not limit themselves to protesting outside of the American bases but that they should target these facilities and teach the Americans a lesson.
BBC reports that many officials in the Afghan political landscape feel the same way as the people protesting, and that more unrest could be caused by the Friday weekly prayer, if the preachers choose to make a case out of the incident.
