Syria Accepts More AL Observers
Syrian Revolution
Syrian authorities on Tuesday announced that they have agreed to the extension of the Arab League mission in their country, as a sign that Damascus is not shutting down completely any channel of communication with the outside world. Still, Assad’s regime has dismissed the new proposal of the Arab League as a violation of the sovereignty of the country. In a meeting in Cairo, the Arab League has demanded Bashar al-Assad to hand over power to a deputy, and to establish an unity government entrusted with calling presidential and parliamentary elections.
It is considered that the new initiative will meet stronger opposition in Syria, which means that the observers’ mission is not likely to produce any result.
According to the Local Coordination Committees, the plan of the Arab League would offer the incumbent government the possibility to tone down the revolution. The leaders of the Syrian National Council, an opposition coalition formed in the image of the Libyan National Transitional Council.
The SNC leaders said that the initiative marks the recognition of the end of Assad’s regime, which in turn compels SNC not to engage in any more talks with the government before Assad announces his willingness to step down.
Arab analysts consider that the proposition made by the Arab League is mirroring the way the Yemeni conflict was solved. In Yemen, president Saleh was faced with a plan to leave in exchange for immunity from prosecution for the deaths of the revolution. Saleh left for US for treatment after he had the brokers of the agreement stipulate that the deal is not to be attacked in court or reversed in any way.
In the case of Assad, analysts believe the proposition of the Arab League to be a middle ground for the tendency of the government to shoot the revolution off and the desire of the people of Syria to leave in a democratic country.
It is considered that Assad is not likely to seize and desist any time soon, and he will not release his control over the army, the security forces and the intelligence, which makes his removal from office impossible without foreign intervention.
The foreign intervention has been advocated on various circumstances, the latest of which was the proposition made by Qatari prime minister, who said that an intervention was requested.
Two weeks ago, the Turkish government announced they wanted to assume a greater role in the region, which was interpreted by a Russian highly-ranking official as a spearhead for a military intervention in Syria.
Bashar al-Assad had warned that any intervention in his country would have the effect of a earthquake, given that his country is a political fault line. He also said that any such intervention would be met with staunch resistance.
In spite of the situation in Syria, Russia has closed a deal of $550 million of warplanes, which the Russians said it was going to inflict no change into the military situation in this country, since the 30 Yak-130 were training desks.
