Turkey on Thursday declared that it was only bound by the U.N. sanctions against Iranian nuclear program and that it may not abide by the new package of sanctions imposed by the United States, which target the oil production of the Muslim state.
The Turkish foreign ministry announced it would analyze the new package of sanctions America and its allies want to impose on the defiant regime in Tehran, and is about to be announced by Washington soon.
The American Treasury Secretary visited earlier this week Beijing and Tokyo in an attempt to enlist the support of the two economic superpowers. While Tokyo has already announced negotiations with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to compensate for the oil amount it would not purchase from Iran, China is skeptical about the need to impose such an embargo on the Iranian regime, considering it a mere imposition of the national law above the international law.
China has important dealings with Iran and the possibility of a sanction that would put it in the position of choosing between dealing with the Americans and the Iranians is prejudicial for its growing economy.
According to the new sanctions U.S.A. wants to impose, the countries that do business with Iran will be barred from the U.S. market.
The position of Turkey comes after talks between Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and the Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. The two leaders approached the problem of the embargo on Iran as well as the matter of sectarian violence in Iraq in the aftermath of the American withdrawal.
The Iranian diplomat is expected to meet with president Abdullah Gul, the prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek.
