Poland Observes Two-Day Mourning As 16 Die in Trains Crash
Polish Flag
Poland entered on Monday two days of national mourning after two passenger trains crashed on Saturday near the city of Krakow, killing 16 and wounding 50. Flags are waving at half-mast on the public buildings, while different websites are using black-and-white colors. Entertainment and sports activity were postponed.
The trains crashed head-on on Saturday night, near Szczekociny, in the worst train accident reported in Poland during the last 20 years. The trains were having 10 carriages in total and were carrying 350 people.
One dead person was an American citizen, and among the injured are citizens from Moldova, Ukraine, and Czech Republic. Three of the injured are in critical condition. Police is still searching for survivors in the wreckage, while investigators are trying to determine how did the two trains end up on the same track.
An investigation is under way, and train black boxes are expected to reveal whether human error is to blame for the tragedy.
Two officials are being questioned by the investigators, because they were on duty at the time the accident occurred. They have not been placed under no charges, and no details have been offered about them by the investigators.
A set of points had been installed in the area in recent months, the Polish media reports, and it is possible that some of them may have failed or were not installed correctly. Alcohol tests on the railway workers were negative.
Polish radio said that one of the trains, the regional train which was traveling north, from Przemysl to Warsaw, suffered less damage, because it was powered by a heavy and powerful locomotive than the express train that was going south, from Warsaw to Krakow.
Transport minister was careful to say that the Polish railways were “still very safe” and that this accident should not be a reason for the soccer fans not to use them in the summer, as they come to the Euro 2012 soccer tournament organized by Ukraine and Poland.
Preliminary investigation shows that the intercity that was traveling south from the capital to Krakow was having 95 kph and was on the wrong track.
