Two Western Journalists Killed in Homs, Syria
Remi Ochlik and Marie Calvin
Two journalists were reported on Wednesday killed in the Syrian city of Homs, as shells hit the restive city since Tuesday in a bid of the government to eliminate “the terrorist groups.” 16 other people were reported killed during that attack on Tuesday, and many were wounded. There are reports however that say that the death toll was much higher, that about 40 people were killed during the storm of the security forces on Tuesday alone.
The two were Sunday Times reporter Marie Colvin, and French photographer Remi Ochlik. They were at the makeshift media centre in the Baba Amr neighborhood. The two were staying in a house that was used as media centre, in the neighborhoods controlled by the rebels.
It is also reported that rockets hit the building’s garden after the people went out of the house in search of a place to hide. Three Western journalists were reported wounded.
The crackdown in Syria intensified in spite of the vote in the United Nations General Assembly, which condemned the regime in Damascus for the 5,400 people killed in 11 months of fighting.
The regime is about to hold a referendum on the constitution on Sunday, while the Friends of Syria, an organization of the most important Western states, is to convene on Friday to see what can be done in order to help the people in Syria. The regime has intensified its attacks on the hotbeds of the Syrian unrest, in the central cities of Homs, Daraa and Hama.
