Hillary Clinton Predicts The Fall of Assad's Regime
Hillary Clinton
U.S. State Secretary Hillary Clinton made a “prediction” on Monday, saying that Bashar al-Assad’s regime would fall when enough soldiers, businessmen and minorities desert him. She made this assertion in Morocco on Sunday, when she offered an interview for a television channel in the capital of the African state.
Clinton was careful to assert that she was no fortuneteller and that she could not assess when would that happen, but added that the Syrian army was of conscripts and that the troops would not tolerate to participate in this kind of crackdown for ever, and sooner of later the defections would build and a momentum would be created against the regime, and that security forces and business leaders would follow.
She was very confident that it would happen and that it was only a question of when would it happen, adding that she hoped it would happen sooner rather than later, so that the killings would stop.
Clinton elaborated on her remarks at the meeting in Tunis, on Friday, where the “Friends of Syria” group gathered to show support for the people in Syria, and said that Assad would pay a “heavy cost” for defying the world.
She condemned the Alawite soldiers who were defending the president for their crackdown on the people, saying that they were dishonoring themselves, adding that those who defected would be seen as heroes.
Hillary Clinton toured three countries in the northern Africa, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco, promising American support for their democratic reforms.
In October 2011, a few days before Muammar al-Qaddafi was killed, Clinton made an unexpected visit to Libya, where she expressed hope that Qaddafi would soon be captured or killed, so that the people in Libya may go on with their lives.
On October 20, Qaddafi was killed in the city of Sirte, in an action that remained very fuzzy considering that Qaddafi was showed alive by televisions and then he was reported dead, and was displayed for five days in Misrata until he was buried in the desert.
