One Tibetan Shot In Sichuan By Chinese Security Forces
Tibetan Monks
At least one Tibetan person was killed by security forces on Monday in the province of Sichuan, China, according to the Tibetan government in exile and international rights groups. The shooting occurred in the province of Ganzi Autonomous Prefecture, in Sichuan, following the arrest of many Tibetans in Luhuo, on Monday morning. The arrest began as some pamphlets began circulating in the zone calling for Tibetan independence and listing names of people who wanted to self-immolate in support of this idea.
According to the London-based Free Tibet advocacy group, at least 31 people were shot in Tibet, though it was not clear whether they were killed or not. The Wall Street Journal, which has echoed this report, says that there was no confirmation from the zone of the news Free Tibet offered and that the Chinese government buildings were closed on Monday.
Free Tibet says that the 49-year-old man that was killed was named Yonten, and added that 30 other people were shot and wounded.
The tension is related to the series of self-immolations that have been happening all over Tibetan territories since last March, as monks protest against the program of the Chinese regime to take away their freedom of conscience.
The killing on Monday would mark a new stage of the conflict and is a new step in the way the regime is handling the Tibetan protesters. So far they have only arrested Tibetan monks.
The Tibetan government in Dharamsala, India, issued a statement in which it accused the Chinese government for its violent crackdown on the people. Tensions have been sparking in the region since 2008, when violence spread from the capital of Tibet.
The Tibetans protest in favor of autonomy and the return of their spiritual leader Dalai Lhama, who left Tibet in 1959, when he was forced into exile by the Chinese armies that were conquering Tibet.
Dalai Lhama has expressed more than once against the self-immolation practice, saying it was against the sanctity of life. Still, he has observed a day of fasting and prayer for the people who lost their lives in Tibet.
