Wozniacki storms through third term
World champion Caroline Wozniacki seems to have put her tough debut at the Chinese Open after the Dane rallied past Jarmila Gajdosova 6-2, 6-3 in the second round of the Beijing event.
Despite claiming the victory in straight easy sets, it took the top seed one hour and 20 minutes to make the progress through the third term. Wozniacki, who met the world number 34 for the fifth time in career, broke the Aussie three times in the opener when she also conceded a service amid the term. As for the second set, it brought the top seed two more breaks, something which helped her to go three games atop of the losing pace Gajdosova and clinch the victory pretty easily.
Wozniacki came up with a 56 first serve percentage, a 53 return one and a couple of double faults, winning at the same time 66 percent of service points and 68 points out of 116 played. Concerning Gajdosova’s performance, it included a 48 first serve percentage, a poor 34 return one and eight double faults. The Aussie also won 47 percent of service points and converted two out of four break points.
The head to head series between the two has now gone 5-0 to Wozniacki who will next meet Kaia Kanepi, who has made a free progress after Sabine Liscki withdrew the tournament due to medical problems.
On the same half of the draw, third seed Vera Zvonareva edged Klara Zakopalova in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to set a tough clash against former world number one Ana Ivanovic. Zvonareva, winner of this term’s Doha and Baku Cup events, needed two hours and 12 minutes to reach the third term. The Russian won the opener thanks to a couple of early breaks to suggest an easy win against the world number 42 whom she was playing for the first time.
Zakopalkova came from behind to even the result following an impressive second term which saw her break her opponent three times. The Czech, who also conceded a couple of services, pushed the meeting into a third set decider and even threatened with a late comeback at one point.
Unfortunately for the unseeded, Vera proved to be too strong for the underdog who conceded a couple of more services in the last term without being able to build any break point. The Russian won the decider very easily to advance through the next round where Ana Ivanovic is expecting.
Zvonareva finished the game with a 47 first serve percentage, three aces, 11 double faults, a 51 return percentage and six break point conversions, while the Czech came up with a 47 first serve percentage, six double faults and four breaks only.
Ivanovic, who is ranked 18th, beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-3 in the second term, needing just one hour and ten minutes to secure the third term berth. The Serb, who lacks a title this year, converted all her break points. She won the first set after stealing the Russian three services to draw a clear win against the lower ranked.
The second set saw the same Ana break her opponent twice to power through to a three game lead she eventually converted into a two term victory. Ivanovic’s showing featured a 50 first serve percentage, a 55 return one and three double faults, while Kuznetsova came up with a 61 first serve percentage, the same number of double faults and a 45 service percentage.
Ivanovic has thus improved her record against the 26 year old to 6-2. Svetlana’s last win dates from last year’s Fed Cup event. The Serb will meet Zvonareva for the tenth time, the head to head series between the two having gone 5-4 to the Russian who last grabbed a win against the 23 year old this year at the Carlsbad tournament. Ivanovic’s last success comes from the 2008 Linz event.
On the second half of the draw, Maria Kirilenko edged sixth seed Samantha Stosur in three sets, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5. Kirilenko won the opener at the death after breaking the Aussie twice. Stosur’s replied with an impressive rally which saw her roll past Kirilenko and leave her five games adrift thanks to three breaks.
As for the third set, it was controlled by the same Russian who broke the favorite twice before crating a two game late lead. Kirilenko eventually won the game despite conceding a service amid the term. She finished the game with a 76 first serve percentage, five breaks and a 55 service percentage.
On the other side, Stosur’s showing featured a 71 first serve percentage, five aces and a 45 return percentage. Kirilenko has evened the series with the world number seven to four. Next up for the world 24 is Tamira Paszek of Austria who overcame Petra Cetkovska 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the second term.
Said Kirilenko after the win: “I have so many fans in China, they’re so nice to me. Many people come to my matches and my practice. Yesterday after the doubles they even broke the fence next to the court so they all fell out on the court – it was the first time in my life that’s happened.”
Paszek edged Cetkovska in two hours after surviving an early scare which saw he Austrian lose the opener very easily. The two exchanged four breaks in the first set with the Czech grabbing three of them. The second set showed Cetkovska conceding three services to drop two games adrift.
Finally, the last term was dominated by the same Austrian who powered through to a four game lead. Paszek broke the Czech three times to win the decider with ease. The head to head series between the two has now gone 1-1 with Cetkovska’s last win dating from the 2008 Cincinnati event.
