Berlusconi Could Receive Earlier a Verdict In Graft Trial
Silvio Berlusconi, Italian PM
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi could receive a quicker verdict in a graft case in which he stands accused of having bribed a British lawyer to give false evidence regarding Berlusconi’s businesses. The case started in 1997, when Berlusconi was accused of having given David Mills $600,000 to lie to the court. Berlusconi denied the wrongdoing.
The trial was resumed in March this year, after the highest Italian court lifted Berlusconi’s automatic immunity, and in the session held on Monday the judges decided to cut the number of witnesses, thus making possible that the verdict be delivered a lot sooner.
Even so, it is possible that the trial be postponed until February next year, unless the verdict is reached before the statute of limitations takes effect.
If the prime minister is found guilty, the sentence is purely symbolic, because his lawyers are expected to appeal the sentence, and by the time a final sentence could be passed, it would have been too far off to punish him for a crime that happened so long ago.
Berlusconi’s lawyer was very angry because ten people were cut off from the list of witnesses. By this act, he says, the defense team’s testimony becomes irrelevant. Under these new circumstances, Mills is expected to testify on October 24, and Berlusconi himself is expected to testify on October 28.
Mills was convicted in another case related to the bribe he took from Berlusconi, and was sentenced to four years and a half in jail, but the case was dismissed by the higher courts because of the statute of limitations.
Berlusconi attended Monday’s hearing, and told the press only that he was fine, whereas they [the press] “looked ugly.”
In another trial case related to allegations that are sexual in nature, the prosecution showed that Gianpaolo Tarantini, 36, pimped for Berlusconi, bringing him ladies from London for his sexual parties.
The sexual scandals of the Italian PM have left him without the support of many people in the political world, and with a very bad image among the people in the Mediterranean country.
