Real lose two points at Santander
Racing Santander grabbed a big point last night at the El Sardinero where the hosts held Real Madrid in a scoreless meeting which hindered Jose Mourinho’s side of climbing second in the standings.
Real kept both Di Maria and Kaka on the bench until the second part, while Arbeola was preferred to Sergio Ramos by the Special One who led his side to a second failure this season after the Levante loss. Marcelo was the first to put pressure on Racing’s goal in the first minute but the Brazilian’s volley did not change the scoreboard. Newly arrived Callejon also had a great chance in the fifth minute but the former Espanyol player mocked Marcelo’s perfect cross to finish it poorly.
Mesut Ozil’s cross was also denied by the Santander defence in the 15th minute as Real were still expecting the goal. Marcelo’s cross for Ozil was then dismissed by Racing who started an impressive counter attack which Carvalho managed with some effort.
Santander got their first dangerous chance in the 19th minute when Diarra’s poor intervention allowed the hosts to break through and start a smart counter attack the finish of which was stopped by Arbeola. Stuani also was blocked by the same Diarra two minutes later as Racing were also focusing on attack.
Ozil was the first to pick a yellow card for a foul in the middle. Diarra then tried his luck with a 30 yarder to which keeper Tono was equal. Ronaldo mocked a golden chance in the 31st minute following a great pass from Ozil which the Portuguese treated poorly, losing the ball way too easily.
Arbeola then picked Marcelo who played free Callejon whose finish kept the hosts scoreless with seven minutes remained in the first half. Santander conceded their first yellow card through striker Stuani who was cautioned for a foul on Carvalho with four minutes left. The fist term finished with Ronaldo’s big miss. Ozil cleaned everything around him to pick the star inside the box from where he struck a left foot volley well wide.
The half time went scoreless as Mourinho replaced Callejon with Di Maria right after the break. The second term started with Santander’s big chance brought by Serrano whose shot was denied by Casillas in the 49th minute. Ronaldo and Di Maria missed back to back occasions two minutes later which only earned the visitors a corner.
Benzema tried his luck with a 20 yarder which Santander defence blocked. Di Maria neared edged screamer in the 55th minute as the Argentine delivered a long 30 yard cross which Tono had to tip over the crossbar for more safety. Ronaldo earned Real a free kick in the 66th minute which Mourinho’s side trated poorly. Racing made their first change in the 68th minute when they introduced Munitis for Stuani.
Mourinho also replaced Ozil with Higuain in the 69th as Real were intensifying their attack. Real won yet antoher free kick two minutes later which Ronaldo hit it into the wall. The rebound was also wasted away by Alonso who tried his luck with a range one.
Diarra was shown a first yellow in the 74th minute for a foul on Alvaro. The 78th minute saw both coaches made two more changes, one apiece. Real introduced Kaka for Diarra, while the hosts sent on Adrian for Jairo. The Brazilian got his first chance four minutes later following a corner on the right which Kaka hit straight at the keeper. Marcelo then picked Ronaldo with a long cross but the Portuguese failed to head it goalwards.
Real missed a big chance to go second in la Liga table where they could have stayed just behind Valencia who managed to hold champions FC Barcelona last night at Mestalla.
Said Jose Mourinho after the game: “We had complete control over the game, especially in the first half. We played in our opponent’s half of the pitch after half-time and we didn’t have that many chances on goal. This is due to Racing, who defended fiercely and played their game well looking to take one point.”
Real Madrid are seventh in the standings with seven points, the same as local rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad, sitting one point behind FC Barcelona and three behind the leaders Valencia. Racing Santander are 17th with two points won in four games.
Mourinho’s side will next meet newly promoted Ray Vallecano next Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, while Santander visit Sporting Gijon next Sunday.
