Pakistani PM Receives Chinese Public Security Minister
Pakistani Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani warned on Tuesday the United States of America that an action of the U.S. army against the Haqqani network staged on Pakistani territory would be a violation of the sovereignty of this country.
This tension comes after the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen spoke last week about the ties between the terrorist network Haqqani, saying that it had help from the Pakistani foreign intelligence service in attacking the US embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan.
On that occasion the American official deemed the Haqqani network as a “veritable arm” of Pakistani’s intelligence service. These comments made by Mullen were deemed by the Pakistani PM as negative messages which are bad for the mutual friendship between the two states.
The comments made by Mullen have determined Pakistan to turn attention to China, in order to avert the consequences of losing the Americans as allies in the war on terror.
Thus, the Chinese public security minister arrived to Islamabad on Monday, and he was praised for the friendship his country shows Pakistan. The military, which is the most important institution in Pakistan, said it appreciated the help it got from the Chinese officials.
China and Pakistan thus became “all-weather friends,” and their ties are strengthened by their desire to counterweigh India, their common neighbor, and the American influence in the region.
It is expected by the analysts that the Pakistani diplomacy use the Chinese ties to diffuse the tension created around its involvement with the Afghan terrorist organizations.
As a sign of good faith, Pakistan promised to help China in its own fight against terror, by attacking and destroying the rebel camps that train on its territory to commit acts of terror in China.
The most important such rebels are the Uyghurs, about whom China often said that they had been trained in Pakistan before staging their attacks on Chinese territory, in Xinjiang province, which they call East Turkestan.
Even so, China seems little interested to take America’s place in offering Pakistan billions of dollars in aid.
The Pakistani Prime Minister said that the American upsurge of criticism is due to the fact that the Americans experience difficulties in the war in Afghanistan, and attempt to blame the failure on the Pakistanis.
Gilani said that the Americans wanted to achieve more in the conflict in Afghanistan, and that situation does not go as planned. He reiterated that his country is not to blame for the violence across the border with Afghanistan.
The White House asked the Pakistani government to deal with the links that exist between the Haqqani and the Pakistani officials. The warning was reiterated by the American officials on Monday.
When asked if the US would take action against Pakistan in case it failed to comply, the White House spokesman said his government was reviewing the aid program to Pakistan, and that some measures would be taken.
However, the diplomatic language used by the Americans shows that there is no determined will to cut all ties with Pakistan. The same seems to be the case with the Pakistani officials as well, their foreign minister speaking in a conciliatory manner at the UN about the mutual ties, saying that Pakistan is committed to fighting against terrorism and to installing peace in Afghanistan.
