Falcao pens a five year deal with Atletico Madrid
Falcao has become the most expensive player to sign Atletico Madrid after the Spaniards bought the 25-year-old Colombian for 40 million euros. The player penned a five year deal which runs through the 2016 season.
The best European striker thus split with his former side FC Porto after two successful years which brought him the UEFA Europa League trophy as well as Portuguese title, Cup and Supercup. “Atlético de Madrid and Porto have reached agreement for the transfer of Radamel Falcao. The Colombian strike, top scorer in last season’s UEFA Europa League with 17 goals, signed a five-year contract with the club,” Atletico’s statement read.
Falcao scored 38 goals only last season, having impressed with a unique showing within the European competitions, as well. The forwarder scored 17 goals in Europa League, overcoming Jurgen Klinsmann’s record of 15 set back in 1996 with Bayern Munich. Overall, Falcao’s adventure with FC Porto includes 73 goals and 84 appearances.
Atletico has become his third club, having played 87 games for his first one River Plate. Falcao scored 39 goals for the Argentines for whom he played four years. His international career includes nine goals and 31 selections. Colombia made a poor performance at this year’s Copa America where Falcao’s side lost 0-2 to Peru in the quarter finals.
Unfortunately, Falcao will be no longer able to set new heights and play within the UEFA Champions League as Atletico Madrid finished the season seventh in La Liga, four points behind the fourth position which sends the team through the UCL play-off. Porto have already qualified for the next term’s Champions Leauge group stage after winning the championship.
Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham had been among the main candidates for the striker earlier this summer. Blues’ new coach Andre Villas Boas had looked keen to bring either Falcao or Hulk on Stamford Bridge, but Portuguese manager eventually failed to sign a big name player. Nevertheless, Chelsea are still one week left to do so as midfielders have become a main priority in West London.
Arsenal lost both Cesc Fabregas and Gael Clichy are very close to losing Samir Nasri, the Frenchman being desired by Manchester City’s manager Roberto Mancini. Tottenham have switched their focus on City’s Emmanuel Adebayor as Harry Redknapp is still looking for a solid striker in front. Spurs are very close to leaving playmaker Luka Modric sign Chelsea, though the transfer has not been confirmed yet.
Apart from Flacao’s move, Atletico Madrid have brought Chelsea’s new keeper Thibaut Courtois who will spend the next season in La Liga as loan. The move comes after the Spaniards lost their cornerstone David De Gea who signed Manchester United earlier this summer.
